Edinburgh, Scotland. Enjoy music, sport (dundee united), bit of politics (Scottish republican), Cold War history (particularly Berlin), maps. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪

I remember listening to Achtung Baby for the 1st time in 1991. I was shocked. It was a complete reinvention of the band's sound. Bono's voice had changed and was less powerful but he adopted a more intimate/spoken singing style. The LP still holds up 35 years later. U2's crowning achievement, IMHO.

Alison Moyet - Raindancing (1987) #vinyl Second album and they threw the Jimmy Iovine kitchen sink at this to propel her career in the US. Packed full of lively radio friendly tracks but it soon becomes an album by numbers. Is This Love and Weak In The Presence Of Beauty are obvious standouts

A feature of post-war German democracy has been that the left has traditionally had far more of a firewall to the far left than the center right has had with the far right. The central role of anti-communism in Cold War West Germany created a structural asymmetry that has not been reckoned with.

Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks - Glasgow Absolute blast last night, with a master of prog rock ably backed up by a wonderful band. His voice remains distinct and somehow at 82 he is still capable of hitting and holding the notes.

A controversial instalment for the Modculture film club. A film that divides. In fact, you’ll struggle to find many positive opinions of the Absolute Beginners movie by Julien Temple. But it's an interesting one nonetheless. bit.ly/4ycFBf0

Peter Gabriel - So (1986) #vinyl Landmark album that propelled Gabriel to the top of the charts across the globe. Hopefully you can see the array of talent that went into its production. Eight songs that all stand alone but form a cohesive album. Iconic cover too. Every home should have one
