It’s still hard to grasp that there aren’t 4 GOP Reps (who will otherwise be forgotten forever after retiring & likely defeated next year anyway) aren’t interested in going down in history as all-time 🇺🇸 heroes by caucusing with the Dems & giving them the majority to impeach Trump & save the Republic

Democrats should hold a press conference and announce that if Mike Johnson has no interest in running the House they'd be happy to do it for him

This is the playbook, folks. If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away. Do not be quiet in this moment.

The rejection of national unity post-Trump is right on the mark. I study conflict in Africa, and the failure to hold perpetrators of violence accountable is a major factor in renewed conflict. We ourselves are still suffering from our failure to hold the South accountable after the Civil War.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump – a deal that looks like bribery. America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons. Watch and share his message.

Personalist autocracies underperform, whereas institutionalised autocracies perform similar to democracies (in terms of economic growth)

New paper alert! 📣 @chrisblattman.bsky.social, Arthur Yu, and I reexamine the autocratic growth penalty—the finding that autocracies systematically underperform democracies in economic growth. TL;DR, the penalty is concentrated in personalist, not institutionalized autocracies. Details👇 1/X

I would like Trump's letter to Brazil to live on as one of the important primary source documents of the Trump era, linking trade restrictions in historical memory to impunity for criminal behavior, right-wing nationalist authoritarian politics, coups, domestic illegality, and simple illiteracy.

Today's stage of the Tour de France took place in Normandy, and TV coverage featured footage from Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. After all their sacrifice, I can't believe Nazis are back.

Screencap from TNT Sports' coverage of the Tour de France, with an aerial view of a cemetery featuring rows of white tomb markers on green grass, with a waving American flag in the foreground and a coastal backdrop.

It's become pretty clear over the past 3 weeks and/or 3 years that the "Democrats need to expand the Supreme Court right now" enthusiasts were correct in 2021, and that if and when Democrats regain power, they cannot get caught flat-footed again slate.com/news-and-pol...

The Past Four Years at the Supreme Court Did Not Need to Be This Way

Part of the reason court reform failed in 2021 is that Democrats were unprepared for Ginsburg’s spectacularly ill-timed death.
