Corals harbor intracellular algal symbionts in specialized organelles that enable them to build diverse reef ecosystems. Corals and other cnidarians have repeatedly evolved this symbiosis through the co-option of lysosomal machinery to simultaneously support photosynthesis and extract photosynthetic products from the algae.
