In 2023, Ken Sim & ABC cancelled plans for Broadway active transport lanes because of the $10M price tag, saying we need to spend resources in other areas. So why are they now considering spending $20M rebuilding 2 blocks of 10th Ave, a bikeway Sim once called "perfect"? Read more:

These crosstown bike lanes are great; also, New West really showing in the last few years that when it comes to cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, you can just get things done! The recent network buildout has been very impressive.

The new 7th Ave bike lanes in New West are open in both directions and they're fantastic! This was my route to high school back in the day. But after a few too many close calls with drivers, I started riding on the sidewalk. And after getting yelled at a lot, I stopped riding all together.

Never forget, you can double the number of people in a pedestrian street or people-place in two different ways — by doubling the number of people who come (which is harder), or by doubling the length of time that people stay (easier, but we too often get this wrong). Make streets magnetic places.

Something you notice when you read a lot of stories about traffic violence is how often a witness will talk about the fact that a particular road has seen a lot of crashes or speeding. We know some streets are particularly dangerous and yet no action is taken. That's why these are not accidents.

Love that the 7-11 worker in the video who witnesses these crashes all the time, knows that the problem is the street design. If only our local leaders and city staff GAF.

Thank you all for acknowledging the vulnerability of pedestrians! My mom is a full time pedestrian in Maple Ridge which seems a sea of aggressive cars! She has had to adopt lots of protective strategies (only crossing at safe crosswalks, wearing bright clothes, waving her arms at drivers, etc)

I went to check out the 6-month Broadway closure that started today. Watch how this bus never has to stop! It's coordinated. They have done some truly incredible things with transit priority (for just a 6-month period!) and I want to see that implemented (permanently!) all over the region.

We've been meeting with the City to help ensure this closure has better traffic calming on nearby bikeways than what happened around Main. The plan still sounds far from perfect, but a lot of improvements implemented. Kudos to city staff for being very receptive. We'll have more details soon.

So this isn't good. ABC (+Fry and Bligh) introduced an amendment to the Vancouver General Hospital campus report to order staff to study demolishing the 10th Avenue bike lane in front of VGH and rebuilding it on the north side. They say it's to reduce conflict, but the data says otherwise.

ICYMI: In the upcoming capital plan draft, the City is budgeting $84 million of its own money for road renewal, and $0 for active transport and new sidewalks.
