Possibly odd question Does anyone know if other countries have examples of "Blitz spirit" or "Victorian values"? As in, something people nostalgically invoke from their country's history, despite invariably being far too young to have any actual experience of it.

There are so many bad trends in tech, but maybe one of the worst is people who write (or used to write, pre-LLMs) code describing themselves "forward-deployed" when they mean that they work at a client site, based on wanting to emulate military jargon so it sounds like they're going to kill people.

Just finished reading King of Kings (about the fall of the Shah) and I really can recommend it. It came out last year but it's exceptionally timely given the current crisis in the Gulf, all the more so considering that the Americans seem to have learnt very little since.

In 1882, Van Gogh used a perspective frame outdoors in The Hague—a carpenter’s rectangle strung with thread to keep depth steady. It gave structure to speed, turning quick vision into measured space.
One reason I'm so opposed to early selection is it means the sorting process is essentially done in advance by teachers/parents and so kids aren't even given a chance on the route that leads to the high status and well paid jobs.
Regarding the Max Miller horrors: I worked with survivors of sexual assault for most of a decade. Many who experience partner violence are desperate to normalize relations with their abuser to avoid further harm to themselves, and are far more likely to do so if their child is also being assaulted.
“If this was true, I would be in jail” is not a real profession of innocence; it is a brag about how strenuously the state protects the male right of private sphere violence against women and children.

And how rarely those things happen to abusers, esp. high-status white male abusers.
