Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social · 2d agoI mean, c'mon. What this data shows is (a) there's a huge number of students using AI and not studying for very long compared to peers; and (b) negligible "benefits" for students who did study for comparable time periods and used AI.

Today in "this administration totally supports The Troops", service members are getting notified that their children will no longer be provided with transportation from day care to elementary school. When your work day starts at 6:15 AM, that's a problem.

Like, a lot of us right now have a prior assumption that "AI is driving water shortages." And no, it absolutely tf is not. It's agriculture. It's always been agriculture. Most of us have spent our whole lives not seeing it. We need to stop that ag water blindness before it screws us all over.

Yeah, as somebody who is sensitive to this particular Discourse for personal reasons, it's telling how quickly the perspective has shifted from adults making this decision about their parents to parents insisting they have been unjustly punished for one teeny widdle mistake.

The federal budget deficit for July was $432 billion. That's not the total for the first 7 months. That is JUST THE MONTH OF JULY. That's the largest monthly deficit in US history. It is even larger than during the height of the pandemic when US government spending was keeping the economy alfoat.
