Related - this in Helsinki, a common sight👇 Helsinki generally v good on transit. Merely ok for walking & cycling, v car-centric, strong motonormativity. Ok to block pavement traffic, rarely so for motor traffic. (Full pavement parking for loading/unloading also utterly habitual & normalised.)

I was listening to If Books Could Kill's Lab Leak Conspiracy ep today and started wondering how much of THAT was THIS. Like: Zoonosis happens everyday, but "secret chinese bioweapon leaked" is a Hollywood movie. ofc: the main reason ppl ~believe~ LL is cuz Conservatives spent millions pushing it.

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

I have not read this. I trust Grant Ennis. And I don't know if it is simply extrapolating (multiplying) US figures. But private cost 0.16 social cost 0.55 These figures are WILD.

We need a way to walk and cycle, comfortably and safety, in cities and between urban centres. Taking a car or public transport should be one of the options, without risking your life every step of the way. And the noise connected with walking by a roadside

Okay, so if we’re talking about the #WaronWalking (great framing), the sidewalk deserves way more attention. A lack of connective sidewalk infrastructure, tree canopies, seating, public restrooms, lighting, pedestrian oriented wayfinding, and street-level retail & cultural hubs are major factors.
