New in PN: @ninajankowicz.com on the golden age of disinformation “I’m not optimistic about us clawing back from this unless there’s serious rethinking of our systems, and frankly, regulation of these social media platforms that are making us such passive and uncurious consumers of information."

ICE detainees say they’ve been served food that’s undercooked, spoiled or infested with bugs. They can buy commissary food, but it’s expensive. So self-described California mom Casey Revkin is channeling more than $10,000/week in donations to feed hundreds of kids @arelisrhdz.bsky.social reports

This is very good advice, even if the true problem is at the cultural and systemic level rather than at the individual level. We write too much because academic culture and system value quantity over quality. And this quantity clogs the system, further weakening the quality.
Lots of writing advice is about procrastination or writer’s block. We worry & develop routines to tackle it. But what if our problem is the opposite? What if we write too much? Too many emails, posts, essays, papers. We have become very good at making ourselves write, perhaps too good. 🧵
One would hope, but this was back in a world of shame and consequences.
Don Rumsfeld was forced out after the 2006 midterms because of how much of an anchor the Iraq war became for Republicans. I do wonder if Hegseth might be vulnerable. Objectively he has been a terrible leader of the Pentagon, and Trump will want to blame someone.
The facts and details of this case have been known for about 15 years. Long time coming. In September, on the 30th anniversary of Pac’s death, to boot.

Also only some of the money went to planned parenthood. Other orgs like Black Mamas Matter are built for, you know, babies and women not seeking abortions
lol this is amazing. This nerd did dead baby math.
At some point, the Fox News dopamine hit just doesn't do it anymore and you need an even stronger hit of alternative reality. America, do you know where your Baby Boomers are?

@tomjoscelyn.bsky.social: "To be clear, there is no emergency around our elections. Noncitizen voting is minuscule. Fraudulent voting is minuscule. it's statistically insignificant. There is no big outside interference…But they're searching for a pretext to declare an emergency."

GDP data out this morning shows a strong rebound for Canada’s economy in the second quarter. It also revised the first quarter data to show Canada did not have a technical recession after all (though growth was still very tepid) www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Did he...copy the 1948 Schlesinger poll and add in a couple contemporary presidents?
I have to believe that the slightly larger portion of us do not regard our humanity as a meatsuit seperatimg us from pure productivity. But it’s hard sometimes.
I got nothing.
Sometimes society at large rejects certain ideas because they’ve been thoroughly shown to be wrong and also because they suck and the people who espouse them suck and when someone comes around arguing those ideas should be part of some edgy modern debate we can and should shun them and move on.
The United States and Canada have been friends, partners, and allies for more than 150 years across 32 presidential administrations. And now, solely because of the arrogance, incompetence, and ego of the current occupant of the White House, that relationship is being driven straight toward a cliff.
I don’t misunderstand Palantir. I just think it is crap.
The conspiratorially minded fret that it could steal and sell British data. More sober types worry about “lock-in”, where it burrows deep into the state and ensconces itself. But these fears stem from a misunderstanding of what Palantir does
Chauvin was, in fact, the cause of Floyd’s death. He used a technique that MPD and most other agencies have banned, specifically because it causes death. And the crime for which he was convicted is unintentional second-degree murder, which by definition does not require intent to kill.
Is there ever a time now when he's not trying to ignite a race war?
