"The 2026 elections are shaping up to be another terrible year for working-class representation in Congress."
“Of the 919 candidates running as major-party nominees for the US House and Senate this November, only seven had a working-class job when they got into politics. That’s less than 1%, despite working-class jobs making up about half of the US labor force.” @carnes.bsky.social and I explain why.
🚨New paper🚨 Very pleased that “Using Gender to Choose: Voter Decision-Making in Low-Information Elections”, coauthored with Ellie Woodhouse, is now out at @jeppjournal.bsky.social. In it, we ask: when voters know very little about candidates, how do they use gender when deciding who to vote for? 🧵👇

Really enjoyed attending #EPOP2026 but the news of cuts and job losses from across UK universities is just heartbreaking. Not sure what we can expect from this government but the sector is in an emergency.

Mr Thomas claims, implausibly, that nobody even knew the name of the company, which he had listed publicly over a decade ago, giving his mother as a director at his home address.

I spent two weeks in China 'arguing the case' and they told us it's too expensive and they may as well go to any other country.
Some groans in room at UUK 2026 when Jacqui Smith said the UK continues to be welcoming to international students. She responds by saying that universities need to “get out there and argue the case” for the UK as a destination, particularly compared to some other countries.

I'm really excited to share the news that I've been awarded an ERC Starting Grant! UNEQUALGEN will study the political consequences of generational material inequalities. Super grateful for this opportunity and all the support I've received while preparing the proposal and the interview! 🩷
One thing that sometimes gets forgotten among @erc.europa.eu announcements is how the good folks use their awards to make more humane opportunities: longer, well-resourced, and mentored early-career positions. Dear reader: @danjdevine.bsky.social is one of those good folks for political science.
I am still overwhelmed and processing being awarded this grant. It funds a 5-year project from Jan 2027 on how trust can bolster support for major policy action on climate, redistribution, and crime prevention. You can read more here: danjdevine.github.io/contrust/ bsky.app/profile/erc....
Huge congratulations to our colleague @danjdevine.bsky.social who's been awarded an @erc.europa.eu Starting Grant for his project 'CONTRUST: The Consequences of Political Trust for Policy Support'! Check out the project summary below, and be on the lookout for 2x multi-year postdoc opportunities.
