Writes about obscure & forgotten anime/manga/games/media at The Land of Obscusion over on Blogspot. Hopeless fan of all things Masami Kurumada. Published (once) on ANN. Living contradiction. He/him... Who again? https://landofobscusion.blogspot.com/

It's not a nice, solid number... but, screw it, "tonight" will mark the 22nd Anniversary of the debut of the Ring ni Kakero 1 TV anime's debut in late-night on TV Asahi, marking the fourth (& so far [& likely even final]) Masami Kurumada manga to be adapted into anime. I still love this show.

New blog post time! This week's game is Battle Monsters, a fighting game that sometimes gets mistaken as a "Mortal Kombat clone", but is actually much different and far more interesting. Silly characters, grimy aesthetics, and even a bit of platforming made this a pleasant surprise: #blog #gaming

Battle Monsters

I’m often a sucker for a janky fighting game, but I gotta say, Battle Monsters impressed me! It’s jank, for sure, but there’s a lot more going on under the hood than at first glance. Once you reali…

We celebrate Eva Marie Saint, who died today at 102. A #SagAftraMember since 1947, Saint won an Oscar for her film debut in 'On the Waterfront' and starred in 'North by Northwest.' An advocate for organized labor, she leaves an enduring example for generations of union members.

Only one more volume of Legend of Dororo & Hyakkimaru left to go! I read the first four volumes a number of years ago & really liked what Satoshi Shiki was doing with the series, so I'll be really excited to read it in full, hopefully next year (final volume is set for April).

Just an FYI for folks, automation for bug tracking and testing has been a thing since at least when I started in AAA in 2016, so it pre-dates genAI quite a bit. I'm still in a wait-and-see for Capcom, but people being confused about old tech vs genAI is what the current techbros want.

EG fell for it too. :( The Capcom presentation contains a slide with "AI世代のゲームエンジンへ" - the article omits the "へ", for one, but the issue is that while 世代 means 'generation', it's in the 'console generation' sense, not like GenAI. Without へ, translation software gets it totally wrong.

New post on the newsletter! I went through the pro mahjong biographies Vermilion Stella and Crybaby Mermaid. I think I was pretty thorough.

gamesoftrobo.ghost.io/i-read-manga... "Though these books are two very similar stories, told in a cutesy and dramatized mode… they’re not fluff. Fluff doesn’t show your main character vomiting in the toilet to make it to competition weight."

I still need to find 7-8 regular/monthly lettering gigs to enable me to continue paying my mortgage! My experience includes: • 23 years as a full-time letterer for Marvel, DC, Image, etc • 30 years handling print/pre-press/production tasks • 20 years hitting non-stop weekly deadlines for 2000AD

Capcom wants to transform its in-house RE Engine into what it's calling an "AI-generation game engine". https://bit.ly/4dmahCh

Numerous people have already been pointing out for days that western reporting on this is an embarrassingly inaccurate game of telephone, so I'll instead reiterate that it doesn't cost that much to just have a real translator on standby to vet such reports. I know budgets are tight, but come on.

Where did today's anime production hellscape, with too many TV anime produced every season & a focus on initially airing them (in Japan) in late-night time slots, originate from? Well, 30 years ago exactly Those Who Hunt Elves debuted in late-night, establishing the format the defines anime today.

New Review: Those Who Hunt Elves I & II 30 years ago tonight the "modern day late-night infomercial" made its debut with an isekai series about a trio who have to strip elves to find their way back home. Today the format TWHE debuted now dominates anime production... but how's the show itself?

OK, now that Kodansha Print Club has fully released this series physically, it's time for me to finally check out this girl-on-girl MMA manga that I've seen plenty go gaga over. It's time I get hit with the "Iron Wind" of Teppu!

This meme is seemingly what every single company that agrees to be bought up by private equity thinks will happen, regardless of how often it's been proven that private equity continually ruins things, all for the sake of a quick buck & offloading their debts elsewhere. Stop it. You're not special.

I've been wondering what's actually up here for a while + you're not going to believe this but the answer is, once again, private equity. www.avclub.com/shout-factor...
