Labour economist, social democrat, sometimes I post stuff on the economy here: https://socialeconomics.substack.com/ Co-wrote a book about how (and why) to tax the rich called “Share The Wealth”: https://lorimer.ca/adults/product/share-the-wealth/

Read the Justice Ministers Charter statement on C-39 - some fancy lawyer dancing there. It says the new 107 measure “would not generally prevent strikes“, because labour action must have started before the Minister can order people back to work.

Listening to the C-39 committee questions and testimony - is there no one in the Liberal caucus who understands the centrality of the right to strike? They keep bringing up unrelated positive elements of the bill - it's like they're cutting a leg off our chair, and offering to re-upholster it.

The right to strike is non-negotiable. We all want strong collective agreements, stable labour relations, and reliable supply chains, and workers are ready to build the infrastructure and industries Canada needs. But you can’t build stability by weakening workers’ bargaining power. buff.ly/dhfoNnh

Bill C-39 could create more labour unrest, union leaders warn | Canadian Labour Congress

OTTAWA — Bill C-39 could make labour disputes longer and harder to resolve, union leaders warned MPs Thursday, undermining the stability the federal government says the legislation is intended to…

My boss is doing two press conferences on Bill C-39 today - the first one with the NDP, Chief Moore Frappier, and Anna Johnstone - the second one with the CLC and Tom Doran from ILWU. The Liberals are fast-tracking this bill because there’s substantial opposition to what they’re proposing.

2./C-233 was about a simple principle: Canada’s arms export rules should mean what they say. I thank the MPs who supported the bill—including Sean Casey—for standing up for stronger accountability and respect for Canada’s export-control regime. Parliament must be able to hold government to account.

The tech industry has learning that overhyping the threat of its products is great PR. It leads to tons of free press, and now it’s allowing them to shape the regulatory discussion of their products — while distracting from the real ways people are being harmed today disconnect.blog/the-media-ha...

Tech industry deception about the supposed threat of their generative AI tools is nothing new. It’s in fact a well-worn playbook. OpenAI was using it all the way back in 2019 when it released GPT-2. Claiming its new AI model was so incredibly powerful it posed a threat to society was a fantastic marketing ploy, allowing it to capture global headlines and get a ton of free PR. Now they’ve moved on to using it to shape the conversation around their products, but the media seems determined not to learn anything from their consistent pattern of deception.

“This bill explicitly gives government the power to end legal strikes when a minister decides that a strike is or could become contrary to the national interest — and the national interest is defined solely by the opinion of the minister,” warns top labour leader Bea Bruske. Holy shit. This is bad.
