Here we go again &c

Last week a single pint glass from an eight year-old set cracked. Until that moment, we always had plenty of glasses. Hardly ever ran low unless people were visiting. And now? There is never a glass when you need one. The household economy of tumblers apparently depended on that one glass.

It's not by any means the worst thing about the switch from DVDs to streaming as the way most people consume media, but the loss of director's commentary tracks is, selfishly, the one I mourn the most. Let those sweaty little nerds yammer in a sound booth for 3 hours about their process!

"okay but even if the vaccines are no longer 'recommended', people can still get them!" yeah so lemme tell you which vaccines american insurance will pay for. recommended ones

The TDF Femmes was the best racing I have seen all year. Open wheel, endurance, cycling… that was the best. The sport is truly blessed with closely matched riders with distinctive styles and strengths.

Everyone stunned when I solve healthcare by making Trupanion the adminstrator for single payer, then place MassVet in charge of the nation’s hospitals. People quoting Rob’s Red Reader to each other. “The citizen is the beloved pet of the state. The state is the treat dispenser of the citizen.”

Dinner cooked PERFECTLY in the length of time it took to listen to Trio (1987, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt) & now…time for the iwtv finale

drunk girl trying to tell her friends that she thinks they are “weekend at Bernie’s” with McConnell, but she has got completely the wrong movie and keeps calling it “doing a Fish Called Wanda” with him and I’m dying

Absolute first no, but I think I was ~6 when we were watching Four Weddings & a Funeral (which I’d seen before) at a sleepover when it suddenly occurred to my parents to check w/my friend’s parents. (Fwiw violent gore in movies was a Big problem for them, but sex & swearing they didn’t care.)

Do you remember what *your* first R-rated movie was? I finally asked my mom (I couldn't remember), and she told me it was The Lost Boys when I was roughly the same age as my daughter (about 9). The movie traumatized her more than it did me, apparently

It is incredibly hard to relax when the radar is clear, there are no warnings or alerts, and yet your Midwestern brain cannot stop looking outside at an eerily still and sickly-hued overcast day and thinking, “Tornado weather.”

there’s a difference between celebrating someone’s death and celebrating that they are no longer in a position to do great and immeasurable harm to people around the world because they are dead you can do both tho I ain’t gonna judge

NOTE: the duty to hound him out of his comeback attempts does NOT carry with it a duty to engage w/ and thus elevate whatever policies he's shilling at any given pt (policies he'll never, ever have the power to implement) You get to just make fun of him being an inept loser clown who does bad stuff

I will mute other politicians but never Rahm Emanuel bc we have a civic duty to band together and hound him out of his every comeback attempt and I take it very seriously 🫡

One of my favorite things about the Tour de France is the fact there is a “most aggressive” rider award. They literally give you something that says, “We don’t know if that was smart or even good but we like the way you did whatever that was.”

the problem with the games industry is that it makes money in a sustainable way by creating stuff that people want to pay for this is in contrast to how big capital would prefer to make money, by trying to scale fake numbers to infinity using gambler brained investors lured in by impossible claims

The beauty of sports is you can just decide at any point “I give a shit about this now. Against all reason.” Ten minutes later you hate one of the teams more than life and it’s all downhill from there.

Timely heat wave reminder that if you have a car, is not expensive to get a 24 pack of supermarket brand bottled water and keep it in your trunk and pull over to offer it to people who look like they are having a hard fucking time. Helping also makes you feel a little less helpless

my husband is doing fantasy baseball for the first time. he does not follow baseball. his team is run entirely by our 10yo neighbor, who gets a split of his winnings if she helps my husband defeat the rest of the league. they’re in 1st place! but now, a problem: today she left for sleepaway camp
