I'm so grateful to @fsnnorthamerica.bsky.social for inviting me to join the line-up for the conference in October! And I'm especially thrilled to be joined by @ladylark.bsky.social @deanleetal.bsky.social and @julianeugarten.bsky.social to talk about all things disciplinary!

Fan Studies Network North America@fsnnorthamerica.bsky.social · 4w ago

Calling all fan studies nerds! Want to know who our final headliner is?? ▫️▫️▫️ It's Dr. Suzanne Black!! @suzannerblack.bsky.social A researcher (U of Edinburgh) & author of "Between Novel & Network" (forthcoming), she'll be leading a roundtable Oct. 24 titled "Fan Studies as a Discipline?"

A cream colored promotional graphic for a headliner event at the 2026 FSNNA Conference with "Fan Studies Network North America" in navy blocky text at the top. In the top left corner is the FSNNA logo in black.
Below this, in a lighter navy colored font it lists the date of the headliner event as October 24, 2026 at 11:30am ET.
Below that, to the left and in bold letters reads the name of the headliner "Suzanne Black"
Below Dr. Black's name, on the left it says the name of the headliner roundtable "Fan Studies as a Discipline?" and below that, in smaller, pink to purple ombre text it lists the other panel guests "Naomi Jacobs, Dean Leetal, & Julia Neugarten"
Taking up the right side of the graphic is a color photo of Suzanne Black, a woman with long, wavy, honey blonde hair with blunt bangs across her forehead. She is wearing a dark gingham patterned long sleeve dress with a wire floral broach at her chest.
Around the edges of the graphic are scattered stars and faint swirling lines forming a border.

“It’s not a big moment, or at least, it doesn’t seem like one within the context of a rom-com […] That, in some ways, makes it even better. Olive doesn’t get a big identity crisis; she just has a conversation with her roommate.”

There hasn't been enough talk about how The Love Hypothesis explicitly labels its main character, Olive, as demisexual. We discuss why it's big HERE: https://fangirlish.me/46O3dKU

“Nicole Field’s ‘The Widow and the Raven‘ runs Mina Harker’s journal straight into Poe’s ‘The Raven,’ a mashup that could have been a gimmick but instead lands its ending well.” From a generous review by Andrew Byers for OF DREAD, DECAY, AND DOOM on @hellnotes.bsky.social ❤️🙏 See full review below!

(I'm not on Instagram) But it has come to my attention that a public statement and apology was recently made after the below review of Adventitious Magazine's first issue. @adventitiouswords.bsky.social, it would be my great pleasure to formally accept your apology on behalf of us all 😆

Screengrab from Adventitious' Instagram about a much needed apology regarding the amazing short story by P. A. Cornell entitled "The Soundtrack of My Afterlife"Text reads: It has come to my attention that, in a recent review of the first issue of the magazine featured in Interstellar Flight Magazine, Nicole Field refers to Red's situation as "rein-car-nation."Text reads: I should have made that pun.

I never did. In 7 months since the release of the story, I never even thought of it.

For that, I am so, so sorry.

There's a lovely shout out for "Hunter Mother Sailor Wife" in this review. Adventitious has swiftly become one of my favorite magazines, and I am honored to have a story in the first issue and delighted to see others picking up and enjoying the magazine.

I don’t exactly know why, but this little book, despite no award wins, movie deals, or much publicity, has quietly become the third best-selling thing I’ve *ever* written, right behind Fairyland and Space Opera. Thank you to everyone who’s been devouring it for five years now! #comfortmewithapples

“Queer/trans disabled people need poems as surely as we need warm oatmeal in the morning — common and essential. We who don’t (can’t) leave our houses or beds. We deemed disposable. We desexualized, degendered, dehumanized. We need poems to help us find each other when we’re drowning.”
