Most people outside of academia don't know how fragile research ecosystems of talent, infrastructure, and momentum really are. Once the funding, people, and institutional memory are gone, it’s incredibly hard to rebuild.

The bigger tragedy is that many researchers will be forced to forgo a research career entirely. Think of all the innovations and cures that will be lost to the world. Americans will pay for this structural vandalism for generations to come.

Thanks Jenny, Argentina, the US and wherever they can outright bribe the government for citizenship for starters. The idea of setting up a new “Dutch East India Company” to compete with nation states including having their own military does not seem too far off!!

Trump goads the crowd into booing Kaitlan Collins, then says "she's such an unhappy person. She never smiles. She's a very unhappy person."

The thing about the Tucker Carlson//Jacob Rees-Mogg interview is that Tucker is an American moron whose entire tactic is “assume the other guy won’t question my premises”, up against a British aristocrat that debates for fun at Oxford Union. Its like a small animal encountering an Apex predator

Tucker: “I never understood why 🇬🇧 fought World War 2?” 😕 Rees-Mogg: “It was good vs. evil…We did the right thing…” Tucker: “Has 🇬🇧 benefitted?” RM: “We defeated Hitler… We’d all be speaking German…” Tucker: “Who cares?” 🤔

I didn't know until a couple days ago that Drunk History is back! (The syllabus for the New Deal needs to be updated to reflect the latest scholarship on Frances Perkins and FDR getting booed by Congress after he sang them the New Deal song.) m.youtube.com/watch?v=YAw6...

Hear me out -- Drunk History: Live

Originalism is both #gaslighting & a secret handshake code. As #gaslighting it serves as a Trojan horse, to smuggle all manner of other things in. As a handshake code it's a way to coordinate the smuggled evils. So in that broad sense, it's ALL originalism, even when--as here--it plainly isn't.

Jonathan Ladd@jonathanmladd.com · 15h ago

The current court majority isn’t remotely originalist. The only one of their major conservative decisions on the last several years that is even arguably originalist is Dobbs. The immunity case, the Muslim ban case, all the cases striking down the Voting Rights Act? Not a bit.

Next week I get to teach one of my favorite books for my “From the New Deal to Age of Reagan” class: MY SOUL IS RESTED, a marvelous collection of oral histories of civil rights participants and leaders. I now have to hold the book together with a rubber band because the cover has fallen off.

I don’t think the ad is especially helpful to Paxton (hey, the wife I cheated on says if she can vote for a scumbag, you can, too). But it’s more than fair to investigate whether her support for him is a chit in their divorce settlement negotiations. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/03/u...

As She Divorces Ken Paxton, His Wife Urges Texans to Vote for Him

In a new ad, Angela Paxton tells voters to focus on the “whole team,” not “individual players.”

Wolff also recounted asking Sam Nunberg, one of Trump's earliest political hires, to explain the president during the first months of his term. "Sam looked at me like he was incredulous," Wolff said. "And he said to me, 'You don't get it.' And I said, 'What?' And then Sam said, 'He's an idiot.'"
