Just in time for Halloween, I made a Marine Heatwave dashboard. It's unintentionally horrifying. 😱🌊🥵 Hourly water temperatures from California's buoys, moorings, tide gauges, and shore stations, together on one map. #Oceanography #ClimateScience #Science tini-scientific.github.io/beach-thermo...

Real-time water temperature at California's offshore buoys, compared with each buoy's 1991–2020 climatology.

Finally learning python. The inline for loops are throwing me for, well, a loop (although interesting!) and the extensive use of with and renaming is fascinating from a cultural/linguistic perspective. Trying to shake off years of functional programming and remembering OO. It's a wild brain ride!

🌊 Great to see this CIEE-funded Working Group in action! Researchers came together to explore how kelp forests vary across the Northwest Atlantic, from Long Island Sound to the Arctic, and what the future might hold. Collaborative synthesis at its best!

Amazing week with OUTSTANDING colleagues thinking about kelp forests in the northwest Atlantic - how are the similar & how are they different from Long Island sound to the Arctic, what have we learned from watching them change, & what does the future hold. Thanks to @ciee-icee.bsky.social!

A team of scientists from everywhere in the northwest Atlantic posing in front of gorgeous fall trees.

My newest #Rstats package, {bartisan}, was accepted by CRAN today! {bartisan} implements Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), a machine learning method that has the benefits of Bayesian posterior inference and automatic regularization. #statssky #episky #causalinference #ML

Science is inherently political and when our government is actively hostile to science as a whole, publications should be able to write about it without being censored. Alas. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

“The culmination of my life’s work may have been targeted by an AI-assisted censorship tool & terminated by a politically-motivated AI hallucination” If you care in any way about science, you need to read this thread from my friend Kelton Minor.

Together with other scientists I’m suing the 🇺🇸 US National Institutes of Health for violating our 1st Amendment rights & censoring our health science. I’m ready to shine a light on the darkest days. Buckle up, read on. This gets pretty wild… THREAD

I have started to consider budgeting a personal assistant type of role into grants for this very reason. Has anyone done so? It feels...... weird, as it's not a cultural norm, & yet, I feel like it would make me a better professor. There are remote part-time personeal assistant business out there...

Email, I'd argue, has similarly shifted norms in ways that individualize work that used to be shared (i.e., most professors no longer have their own secretaries to handle correspondence) and that create more of it (since the expectation is that we can respond immediately and field more requests).
