Turns out the only unit on campus that is making a profit is central administration. And you're not going to believe this, but that's the unit who gets to decide the formula for how profitability of an academic unit is calculated.

Yes, please. It's difficult enough to keep track of Australia, Norway, and USA time zones in relation to each other (especially since Australia changes in the opposite direction). Having the change spread out across a month means October and March are impossible for scheduling.

Look, I get daylight savings time is a contentious issue, but could we all maybe get behind a single weekend where everything changes? Australia changed today. UK changes in 3 weeks. Canada a week after that. My poor diary.

Of course, with the power dynamic that exists between a professor and a student, consent is a difficult issue. A student may feel they can't say no. They may feel they can't report. Basically, type specimens are the passwords of biodiversity science. Without them, we're locked out of doing anything. And like passwords, we all too often scribble them down on a post-it note, then forget where it is.

Folks, FTR this is a breach of publication ethics. @ijpsjournal.bsky.social has a policy that forbids it and we are nowhere near the only ones.

I've talked to a few journal editors who are concerned about similar problems re: anonymous reviewers. If a peer reviewer wants a little help & feeds your unpublished submission into an AI system, they've just shared your proprietary work & broken confidentiality. A nightmare to think about

Not just harassment and assault, but also professional misconduct. I protected someone who harmed me because I didn’t want to harm him. My welfare came second to his career in my own eyes.

Women will take this into account when deciding how to approach harassment and assault. “Do I want to ruin this person’s life over my incident?” The answer is usually no. I’m sure this often weighs as or even more heavily for some women than concerns about the personal blowback.
