As a numbers geek and an emigrant, I'm delighted to've been in Australia long enough to take part in the census. 🇦🇺 As a queer person, I'm pleased to find they offer heaps of options for the gender and sexuality questions. 🏳️🌈

I (living in Australia) am monitoring a US wildfire that threatens a family member tonight. InciWeb inaccessible outside of US (even with VPN). Facebook requires login. WatchDuty can't download from Aus Apple Store. I can't even access a evac notice map. So frustrating that everything is blocked.
Here are 70+ accounts to help you follow along at home for #Botany2026. Are you attending and not in the starter pack? Reply here to be added.
I can't make it to #Botany2026 this year, but I don't want to miss out on all the cool plant science being presented. I've made a starter pack to follow along from home (and to find more great botanists to follow year-round). Reply here to be added! go.bsky.app/HdDpDrW
Nothing missing, one or two odd duplicates despite my being pretty sure they weren't like that before and that I never added them. But can't be sure, because I've never archived anything. The idea of Google Scholar not just working was like thinking the ground could suddenly turn into marshmallow.
Three opportunities for Australian students and EMCRs working in (sub)alpine regions! Please share the opportunities in this thread widely. #ecology #grant #scholarship #internship #alpine
Wohoo! Yes, postdocs at #Botany2026, please come to the Postdocs in Botany affinity group on Monday from noon to 1:30pm. Arizona Grand Ballroom… @botanist-brooke.bsky.social and I will see you all there! :)
And 9% are postdocs. That's 96 amazing peeps at #Botany2026 who could turn up for Monday's Postdocs in Botany affinity group social in the Arizona Grand Ballroom. #plantpeopleFTW
Are you at #Botany2026 & have an idea for a special issue of Apps in Plant Sciences or Am Journal of Botany? Talk to Theresa Culley or Amy McPherson or Beth Parada or Sean Graham or Briana Gross! Especially if you are a "junior" scientist looking to make an impact! bsapubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com

Welcome to the publications of the Botanical Society of America. Our mission is to publish and support the Society in promoting botany, the field of basic science dealing with the study and inquiry into the form, function, development, diversity, reproduction, evolution, and uses of plants and their interactions within the biosphere.

To the reviewer and AE who were *adamant* that we should delete these watercolors: FYI im getting loads of compliments on them. Everyone says we need more art like that in peer-reviewed pubs.
Also check out these GORGEOUS watercolors by Rice biology/art student Caroline Pollan!
13. Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.

I’m surprised by the number of #Botany2026 posts that don’t bother with good alt text. Besides all the perfectly sufficient pro-human reasons to take basic steps to welcome everyone into the conversation, it’s going to limit your reach. I guarantee it.

...They argue that we, as ecologists, should be better at writing about the bits that don't quite neatly fit into the IMRAD template for peer-review that we are well-trained to produce. There's a great @yourewrongabout.bsky.social episode on gay seagulls that I promise is relevant here...
Not sure whether I can keep up with managing #Botany2026 conference posts on four platforms…. So this is my vote for making bsky the “official” one for next week.
#Botany2026 is almost here! The Bulbous Lab will be there in full force (see image for times and locations of our talks)! Can’t wait to see everyone and hear about all the awesome botanical science going on!
Hate will never win - but wow does it hurt sometimes. Sending so much love to the Berlin queer community right now, especially the friends and family of the person killed and those injured. (context: yes, someone drove a car into a Pride event. not joking. they've cancelled the parade.)
Actively demystifying the hidden curriculum is a key obligation of supervisors and mentors at all levels, including in the classroom, peer-to-peer mentoring, and in informal conversations. #academia #research #science #FirstGen
I think one of the most underrated skills of a good PhD supervisor is actively teaching you the hidden curriculum in academia.
UC Davis will no longer pay the difference so that GRFP recipients earn the same as other students. So mid-PhD students will lose nearly 25% of salary & new students will make less than their peers. Apply for the GRFP, it’s a wonderful help to your career. Just don’t come here if you get one.
Heartbroken to see that UC Davis Stable Isotope Facility is closing in a couple days after nearly three decades of service. UCDavis SIF was integral to the research I did before and during my PhD. They made stable isotopes accessible even for small scale projects, and will be sorely missed. 🧪
