This Roman ring, wishing good life to Senicianus, was found in Silchester. It’s now on display in The Vyne. Its fame derives from the archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler consulting Tolkien on it in the ‘20s. Tolkien was inspired by the idea of a lost cursed ring & the rest is literary history. 🕰️C4thAD

Healing can begin with listening. Cree elders on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation and Tibetan Bön monks from Nepal came together for ceremonies, cultural exchange and shared learning. These are the kinds of stories public-interest journalism brings to Canadians, connecting us through understanding.

“It's a little embarrassing that after 45 years of research & study, the best advice I can give people is to be a little kinder to each other.” Aldous Huxley, born on this day in 1894
Walking in the rainforest the other day, the canopy overhead was immersed in a 'flocking': a pippering, squeaking multi-species band of blue, great, coal, and long-tailed tits, plus others like goldcrest. This behaviour evolved as a defence against predation, for eg by sparrowhawk. Just magical.
One of most beautiful archaeological pieces I’ve ever seen the torque de la Dame de Vix has been stolen from museum in Chatillon-sur-Seine. It was found in 1950s beneath a pile of rubble & trees in a field near where I lived along with her tomb & other funeral goods.
Heads up: Taylor Farms lettuce is sold under these brand names: Marketside (sold at Walmart) Earthbound Farm (owned by Taylor Farms) Cross Valley Farms (owned by US Foods) Private labels for Target, Whole Foods (365), and Amazon Fresh. AVOID ALL OF THEM

Those claiming only Canada has wildfires now are trying to divert attention from the fact that climate change is causing wildfires globally. We can’t fix a problem by refusing to understand the cause. Click to view an interactive map of wildfires around the world: firemap.live #ClimateChange
Everyone who hears liars like Trump, MAGA and the GOP lying about “who’s at fault” for #ClimateChange-fueled wildfires this summer, and every summer to come, should read and share this thread. #ClimateCrisis #Wildfires
🧵 Dear Republican lawmakers, Canada has the largest intact boreal forest on the planet. An increasingly hotter world due to #ClimateChange makes longer dry seasons, far larger wildfires & yes, more smoke. No amount of "raking" fixes it. The scientists warned of exactly this for a very long time /1

Timeline cleanse: American pikas calling to each other in the Canadian Rockies. Sound on to hear the loud “MEEP!” made by these potato sized alpine mammals. They’re way off under those cliffs but the calls travel. *this is likely a niche post, but it’s one of my favorite sounds in the world.
