“The climate emergency kills,” he said on Monday. “And that’s why it’s not enough to address the consequences, which we do; what we have to do is reduce its causes, anticipate its effects, and, consequently, better prepare our country to protect people’s lives.”

The multi-billionaire CEO of Shopify thinks a “good system” is one where the poor don’t get to vote in elections and the rich get to vote several times over. I wish I was kidding. Oh, and guess what? This guy and his pals are trying to influence our politics -- and they're arguably succeeding:

I wonder, if you polled people, how much extra they would pay each year to have their city *not* be covered in thick, choking wildfire smoke for days at a time. I wonder if that might give you more insight into "willingness to pay" vis a vis climate change than asking in the abstract.

If you're wondering why the sky is orange, the air unbreathable & the forests on fire - and who might be responsible - look no further than the Canada Pension Plan There might not be a fossil fuel industry in Canada were it not for our public pension plan #cdnpoli www.desmog.com/2026/06/22/c...

Economic inequality is a threat to everything I love about this country -- and to everything that is admired about Canada around the world. We need to centre inequality in our economic strategy. One way is to expand opportunities for more people to access capital. www.thestar.com/business/opi...

How the growing chasm between haves and have nots is unravelling Canada's social fabric

Amid skyrocketing costs, a recent Leger poll found two thirds of Canadian's already in dire straits report their financial situation having worsened, writes Heather Scoffield.

Put differently, if you made a dollar EVERY SECOND, you would be a millionaire in just under 12 days. It’d take you 31.7 years to become a billionaire. You’d have to have been born 31,709 years ago — in the Upper Paleolithic era — to become a trillionaire. IF YOU MADE A DOLLAR EVERY SECOND!!!!

Rachel Gilmore@rachelgilmore.bsky.social · 2mo ago

Counting to a million, if you count one number per second nonstop, would take you just under 12 days. Counting to a billion would take you about 31 years. Counting to a trillion would take you 31,709 years. You would have had to have started counting DURING THE UPPER PALAEOLITHIC ERA.
