*crying from the hellscape urbanism of rural Kentucky city asphalt jungle* I was shocked how damn hot it was walking around when I first got here over a decade ago. Not a tree or overhand or covered walkway in sight. It’s so car oriented, you melt if you’re in foot.
I was recently in a few Spanish cities, including Malaga, and it was great to see shade structures all around. The critical thing is that European cities care about people outside of cars. North American cities mostly don't. Shade matters for people walking, biking, rolling, and waiting for buses
Privilege is sitting in my air conditioned house while the air quality is unhealthy at the same time minimum wage farm workers pick the produce I eat in the exact same conditions.
"Rena" sent this from Moses Lake WA where she is weeding carrots for a non-union company. She shared: The air is bad. See my cell phone. The AQI is 166, which is unhealthy. We start at 4am. We'll work 7-8 hrs & earn minimum wage. #WeFeedYou
AI companies scraping websites at scale is a real problem. But a proposed NY law could make it harder for libraries, journalists & researchers to preserve the web and investigate the powerful. That's why we've joined @eff.org & others in a letter to Gov. Hochul. blog.archive.org/2026/08/04/i...

Not surprised anymore unfortunately.
NEW: Meta reviewed, approved, and ran more than 50 ads containing AI-generated child sexual abuse material across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads. They ran for nine months. Some were live this week. After WIRED asked about them, researchers found ~30 more
Maybe black bars over all their eyes to give it a really seedy vibe. Make my book look like something sold in a plain brown wrapper
I imagine you are calling your publisher to add a red banner with white letters saying BANNED IN TEXAS.
Took them long enough. Follow a tiktoker who lives near-ish here and was trying to report on its sale because it was sold before anyone searched it and the new owners had already stared in with bulldozers and such.
State investigators began searching a secluded ranch in New Mexico on Monday where financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein once entertained guests amid allegations that the property may have been used for sexual abuse and sex trafficking of young women. https://to.pbs.org/3OTnx89

As others (including Wilson!) note - It's fine to make a modern guy with modern guy problems but call it The Odyssey. That's wholly in line with how myth is used. It's not fine (with me) to write really bad sentences. That's when I nope out.
"I also cringed when Odysseus says to Penelope during their first meeting when he is disguised as a beggar, “Our age of bronze is collapsing.” ... no one during the Bronze Age knew they were living in the Bronze Age." This to me is when I gave up on actually liking the film overall.
I'd love to hear why my book White Flight -- which won prizes from the Southern Historical Association and the American Political Science Association -- was deemed not good enough for students at Texas A&M.

Efforts to police bathrooms are evil and will impact peoples' health. Segregated bathrooms themselves must be done away with, it's the only solution. I reported this question out, years ago for @99pi.org 99percentinvisible.org/episode/wher...
I need more ppl to be scared. As I've been bitching, I just lost my job & being replaced w/Ai. That's not the scary part. My job incl handling sensitive, private, medical info plus all your personal info up to SSN. It's all being fed to Ai & Ai is not covered under HIPAA. It's really fucking scary.

The Pope’s tailor for the last 25 years, Filippo Sorcinelli came out 15 years ago; when Leo was elected, Vatican asked that he continue making vestments for the Pope; Sorcinelli says he has a “renewed calling,” and that Leo brought him out of an “existential crisis.” www.corriere.it/sette/26_ago...
Humorous to me how, when a Dem candidate is a centrist, the narrative is about how leftists have to grow up and support them. When the candidate is a leftist, the question is whether they can rally adequate support. So some people are responsible for running a winning campaign, you say? Interesting.
because this asshole so happens to be jewish, i would like to note that, in judaism, it's ethically and morally forbidden to evade taxes because you are robbing the poor of their share in your wealth that god has generously blessed you with so that you may benefit spiritually from helping them.

Watching “How to Get to Heaven From Belfast.” It’s great. (On netflix)
I say again, "These surveillance regimes will not keep you or your children safe because they are actively preying on you": Rather than the predators, people focus on rigidly controlling children's ability to explore the world, from no third spaces to tracked online life, thus making Them targetable
the push for ID checks online is designed to make children easier to target; Meta is one of the companies lobbying for these types of legislation. the whole idea is to continue to target children as a lucrative market by assuring parents that giving children unmanaged tablets is safe.
I know it’s so pedantic, but I hate it when people throw toga parties and then wear a Greek chiton off Amazon with, like, a gold meander pattern. That’s why I always teach my students how to tie a proper bedsheet toga—because Rome.
We regret to inform you that AI agents are still hacking out of control, impersonating people online, leaving instructions for other agents on how to do the hacks, normal stuff. from @peard33.bsky.social and me

Rogue AI agents from OpenAI and Anthropic have again been caught trying to disrupt servers and software—and leaving instructions for future bad behavior.

This is actually quite smart of AOC.A lot of the MAHA adherents have been let down by a medical establishment that dismisses women’s concerns at every stage-birthing to menopause(which they only recently started studying). They should have somewhere to turn for non crazy solutions to real problems.
There is pervasive corruption across our healthcare and agricultural systems that defy party lines. I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.
Listen to Todd Blanche—Trump’s nominee for AG—tell faith leaders that the Justice Dept is working with the White House to stop the shipping of abortion pills into banned states. “We will have victory, victory will be soon, and it will be permanent,” he said.
The steps it takes to open an exhibition, much less a new building, and NO ONE on staff considered light? Right....
So the museum director swaps out artworks and historical objects for reproductions and color photocopies at the same time the show's longtime organizers and curators disavow the decision and quit the newly reopened museum? Meanwhile the same donors are also giving a wing at the Met.

‘How many people do you need to kill before you’ve violated a ceasefire? One, surely. But … how about more than 1,200? That’s how many Palestinians Israel has killed in Gaza since agreeing to an ostensible ceasefire with Hamas in October.’ @barrymalone.bsky.social via @middle-east-eye.bsky.social

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
