1/23 Sorry, this will be long... There is a lot of shouting about what happened in the Channel yesterday. So I want to go back to basic law. Not immigration policies or political rhetoric. At sea, the starting point is simple: Preservation of life comes first under all maritime conventions.

Ah, but Goldsmiths don‘t see any (economic) value in the degree *to the university*, largely because the government doesn‘t see the value either. It‘s all so sad.

2yrs after I finished my MA History at Goldsmiths, my research rights were bought and I was hired to work as historical consultant on this TV show. It's had BAFTA and International Emmy nominations. I got a book deal, too. Goldsmiths: "No point in MA History, let's fire everyone and delete it."

I just find this so strange, because LLMs have specifically themselves created a terrible, laborious and underpaid job in producing the capabilities they offer What previous technology that automated drudgery required this? Seriously, I cannot think of anything

The daily variability of Ehlers Danlos is wild, some days I'm going up and down stairs carrying things, other days, walking in a straight line is immensely physically and cognitively taxing. Not having consistency is very frustrating.

Back of the envelope calculations: 3600 years of research time went into the collective application process. The research will fund 3200 years of research. We are 400 research years poorer as a result of this. 1/2

We don't have to put up with bad and harmful things just because they exist. We aren't powerless & don't have to passively accept whatever AI companies would like.

This probably explains why Labour is completely uncaring about the destruction of universities & the mass dumbing-down of degrees. You‘d think that the party of the workers could at least rouse themselves over mass redundancies, awful industrial relations, & endlessly worsening conditions though.

The government‘s view on universities is simultaneously that: the point of a degree is only to provide training for work & that all work is going to involve little more than prompting an LLM. If it‘s not AI, there‘s no point to it, but learning how to prompt a chatbot can be taught in an hour (max).

Someone asked me if AI can be used for screening and I said this: I would not use AI as it helped get us into this mess. And it's because it's awful & nihilistic & we should resist using it anyway. It just digs a deeper grave for us. We should have a different approach. Human. Not AI-fuelled.

It is just impossible out there right now

A thing bugging me: When I went to uni, the UK's IMF bailout was a dim and distant thing that happened around the time we were born. Never came up in conversation. Kids starting uni now are the cohort born in 2008 who presumably see the GFC the same way. Ancient history, ok boomer etc

I have to move back to the UK next month and I'm not looking forward to it. The ableist and disabilist rhetorics are at an all time high and it's very intimidating. I also heard the govt cut Access to Work.
