how long could you survive if you had to time travel all the way back to 2023

I have been watching this trend for decades. I have noticed — from broad polling — that the more loudly “Christian” the US gov. is, the more our citizens get turned off from association with Christianity. The number of “unaffiliated” in the US was steady for a long time, then doubled during GWB.
Kinda hard to believe God exists right now, what with everything
you do not have to hand it to the MAHA movement, the movement that drinks raw milk and believes that vaccines cause autism

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.
Durbin: "Mr Blanche has aided and abetted the most corrupt administration in the history of the United States ... Blanche's willingness to casually lie under oath about he statement he made in a room full of witnesses shows the lengths he will go to to avoid offending President Trump."
Spider-Man: No Way Home…why are the wizards cleaning up the snow by hand instead of magic? I mean, I get the idea of not using magic without good reason, but - snow all over the floor seems a reasonable excuse.
I quote Sturgeon’s Law to folks all the time - usually in combination with some variant of selection. The reason a higher percentage of “classics” are actually pretty good is because most of the crap has already been selected out.
I think Sturgeon's Law applies here, ie 90% of everything is crap lol
Not just because it protected the kids, but because it made it safer for our kids to go back to school. People don’t remember how desperate we were for vaccines.
Also the Republicans were screaming that Fauci helped authorize vaccines for children, which is something every goddamn parent I know was praying for every day for more than a year and have been thankful for ever since. These people are all self-centered idiotic sociopaths, nothing more.
She can feel free to go be become an alcoholic on her own, but I’m gonna keep my games.
This may sound radical but "games are shit" is actually the median opinion of every Gamer.
There were websites where you could put your zip code in, and they’d tell you the local test positivity rate as well as ICU capacity, among other things. Are people’s memories really this short?
RFK Jr: Trump wanted to end lockdowns. In Fauci's diary, he talks about how the president was calling him trying to get him to reopen the country BASH: The lockdowns were down by governors K: They cited Fauci B: Govs were hearing from hospitals that their ICUs were overrun K: That's not true
you should be in jail, but instead you are describing an incredibly common abuse dynamic where the victim tries to keep the abuser happy to avoid another explosion this guy makes me sick
Rep. Max Miller: "These are incredibly serious criminal accusations. If these accusations were true, I would be in jail — I would be. My former wife would not have been offering to cook me dinner and inviting me to playgrounds. Think about that."
All social media seems to involve people being semi-anonymous dicks to strangers, but BlueSky has a special mix of self-righteousness and dickishness that no other site can match. Related: today I learned that some people are assholes because other people get groceries delivered.
I may be showing my age, but I find it wild that people get hooked by talking to LLMs. Like… why do you try to converse with a tool? I guess I understand the game of pretending the computer is sentient?
Confirmed: Strange New Worlds is in an alternate timeline. TOS Kirk had no relationship with his son. It’s not even clear he knew he had one until Wrath of Khan.
In January, I added going to the gym a couple of days a week to my running and cycling. Tonight, for the first time in almost 30 years of knowing him, my husband said he liked the shirt I was wearing because it shows off my arms…
A lot of people in the replies are assuming the author is a sadistic misogynist. Based on the stated goals of the study, my best guess is that they’re actually a well-intentioned junior scholar with a bad, sexist mentor.
And let me add: this is not the weirdest or worst AI moment I’ve had as a sexual violence researcher. When your day to day work is about rape, it becomes really obvious that AI is fundamentally about violating consent and pushing a reality on people that is worse than reality actually is.
I just did a peer review for one of the most horrifying studies I’ve ever read. I won’t go into details, but it included putting participants through an “AI simulation” of being raped at a party.
Today seems like an excellent day to re-read @gidmk.bsky.social’s superb, accessible, beautifully written piece of science writing on Covid origins The peer-reviewed scientific research literature points to a zoonotic origin (as for most epidemics & pandemics) gidmk.substack.com/p/pandemic-r...

From the abstract: “promoting a woman to Associate Professor increases female faculty by 1.5 members after 15 years, leads to six additional female PhD graduates over the following decade, and raises the number who subsequently remain in academia and reach tenured positions”
Fascinating paper on the progression of women in academia. 👩🏻🔬 ⚛️ 🧪 #AcademicSky docs.iza.org/dp18477.pdf?... Here's an excerpt from the conclusion:
This is a well-produced segment. I encourage you to watch so you can hear the noise for yourself. The professor of environmental health science that they interviewed called it an “unprecedented new noise source.”
Neighbors say noise from Michigan data center is 24/7 and upending their lives
One Michigan community has been experiencing the reality of a data center next door for a couple of years now, and they say the sound has changed their lives.

This CBS News story reports Trump’s SCOTUS appeal on mail-in voting as just a garden-variety legal move. It doesn’t even make a nod toward noting that there’s zero evidence of fraud in the procedure. And that’s the subtle, gradual way you degrade a news org. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-s...
Trump asks Supreme Court to step into dispute over mail-in voting executive order
A federal appeals court on Sunday left in place a lower court decision that blocked implementation of key parts of President Trump's executive order.

My two cents People are going to get so fucking sick and not know why. Some people are going to die.
Astonishing. RFK Jr. adds 8 members to a 6 member FDA advisory panel. 6 of them were sellers of peptides, and the 7th a compounding pharmacist. In an 8-6 vote with all 8 votes coming from these new panel members, the panel approved 4 peptides against the objections of FDA scientists.
