'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

As you know, with a for-profit prison industrial complex, every unincarcerated person is lost revenue. Disgusting.

It's pretty infuriating that Trump is denying disaster aid to Oregon for political reasons and I have barely heard anything about it, while Biden was falsely accused of doing the exact same thing to North Carolina and millions of people believed that

The fact that no one in the mainstream press (or, more understandably, on the knives-out city council) seems to think SPD bears any culpability for inaccurate information SPD has put out and for SPD's actions on Sunday night is bonkers, and goes to show how differently this mayor is being treated.

99% of the time, when someone accuses you of selective outrage, it’s a way of politically demobilizing you and shutting you up “Why are you angry about data centers instead of fast fashion” isn’t about making you care about fast fashion. It’s about shutting you up about data centers And visa versa

Concerns over fake phenomena cannot be held in good faith. There's no such thing as "good faith" concern over razorblades in Halloween apples or vaccines causing autism. If you still have 'concerns' about these issues you are uninformed, a bigot or being manipulated. No other option.

What are the classics for? Well, one thing they're for is providing an opportunity to look at This Modern World with enough of a plausible distance to try to really see ourselves. Nolan asks "what if, in your hubris, you undermine the very values that made your society what it is?"

Revising this to -75 years, my options are Home Ec teacher, Mechanical Engineer, Home Ec teacher, and U.S. Forestry Service ranger. So probably the teacher. At -100 (GGPs): PE teacher, school principal, homemaker, Home Ec teacher, coal miner, teacher, seamstress. So again, teacher.

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

Noting that housing opponents have compared housing for renters to nuclear power plants and highways today, Lin says, "I don't think housing and future residents are toxic waste or pollution that need to be studied for years and years and years on end. I believe housing is a human right." !!!

Nolan's hardly an underdog, but I really do think we need to get away from the idea that fidelity to source material is an index of quality. There are absolutely problems with the film, but it's an entertainment designed to warn audiences that complex civilization is coming unglued. It succeeds.

‘Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺 into iambic pentameter. In one interview, he cited my version of it: “Tell me about a complicated man.” But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.’ New, by Emily Wilson www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

150,000 marched yesterday in London for trans rights. Opened the Sky News app. Scrolled and scrolled. Nothing. BBC News app. Nothing. Guardian app. Nothing. This is what actual silencing looks like.

People have been predicting "post-scarcity" for ~100 years, and the problem is never that we don't have enough to feed, clothe, house, and educate everyone. The problem is oligarchs, like Musk, would disappear in that environment, *so they fight like hell against it*.

Oh god having relatives in Kenosha WI and Savannah, GA at the same time when I was in HS meant every break, I came back with a new accent Binge-watched "Slow Horses" and I was annoying myself. Two weeks in the UK? y'wot?

People are making fun of AOC for having a slight southern accent while speaking in Memphis but they clearly don’t know the pain of habitually and unconsciously imitating the speaking style of the people around you
