I have spent the last two and a half years with this sword of Damocles over my head. The word echoes in your mind. Cancer. People ask you, casually, "how are you" and you struggle not to reply I HAVE CANCER. I seriously underestimated the fucking JOY of knowing it's gone. 2/3

Whoopsie! "Trump’s legal team is asking Lett to allow Trump to go back and change the language of the suit, so that his lucrative business dealings as president are not subject to public scrutiny."
Yeppers. I am no longer going to conferences in the U.S. And I am not alone.
Detentions of International Scholars at Airports Raise Alarm
A Johns Hopkins University researcher was detained at an airport by immigration officials and later released. Cases like hers make travel fraught for foreign scholars.

I'm definitely on the "we've had enough james bond movies let's stop" side.
This does indeed change everything. If you can *do stuff* while you're in the transporter stream then that strongly implies there's no actual break in the process. That might very well change everything. (I would always rather be correct than "win" an argument.)
?? This isn't a matter of altering perceptions. In Realm of Fear they physically grab other physical things inside the transporter beam and bring them out of the beam with them. It was a fully continuous process. The franchise is wildly inconsistent on how these things work.
I love the idea that–among all the various obvious possibilities–philosophy is a thing that can kill you.
Ultimately, I cannot say that I am the same man I was ten years ago, in any sense of that phrasing. That's a whole different guy. So did he "die"? I guess he did! What killed him? Time. Biology. Psychology. Maybe philosophy.
I am an English professor who studies these genres, which is just to say that I've read and thought a lot about this, and the conclusion I've come to is: ALL FICTION IS "FANTASY." The difference is not how real they are but what genre conventions they happen to use.
I love this thread about matter “transportation”. It is rational & logical, instead of fantastical & philosophical. I commented on it at the end, so read the whole thread… and then stay for the commentary, ha ha…
Okay, so: in-universe, the transporters are established technology. Everyone agrees that the "you" who was transported and the "you" in the second location are the same you. It works because the show(s and movies) tell us it works. But.
This is what writing *is.* What the reader experiences in just the output of all this backend structure that authors create. If your characters are randomly generated by an algorithm and not a product of your thinking, then you’re not actually writing.
Lord have mercy a video on here telling writers that AI can be used as a tool for: - building character lists - organizing ideas - drafting outlines - brainstorming structure - and more Dawg that's all a part of the writing process.

Despite all the meme jokes about transporters killing you and sending off your clone to finish your mission, that's not really how the transporters on Star Trek work: They convert your matter into energy and then *transmit* that *same* energy to a location to be reassembled as matter.
I mean this sincerely: I think pro Israel people really need to begin internalizing that this is not a fringe opinion anymore and in fact is very statistically likely to be the average view of any brown Democratic candidate for office or any candidate under the age of 50
Rest in peace Katsushi Murakami (1942-2026). A legendary designer for many #tokusatsu & #anime series and toys. He was responsible for the revolutionary #Chogokin toy line from Popy/Bandai in the 70s, not to mention the whole super #sentai genre.
I don't actually see any evidence of this? As far as I can tell most academics response to the Wilson piece (those who have seen it at all) was "huh, fair enough - I liked the film tho". I'm guessing this isn't registering because low key calm responses aren't flashy or memorable.
If the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.
psssst anyone have any recommendations for queer romances with characters dealing with chronic pain, *preferably* historical
Only people in LA will understand how funny this. Like, one of my upstairs neighbors sells upcycled furnitures, does deliveries, and also is a mermaid tank performer for parties.
Even the buildings in LA have 3 jobs
Another wonderfully written book that makes my blood boil it's Enshittification. If you want a stronger understanding of why tech has gotten worse and what we can do about it this is an essential read. It also is the only book I've read that recommends *light* copyright infringement which is fun!
Oh my god the dietician who is telling everyone in the White House to only eat steak and sauerkraut doesn't wipe his ass.
Behold: 21st century eugenics logic *knowingly* using Darwin as cover. I have reported it as misinformation.
This is it. Will they outnumber us or will we outnumber them? Teach your children well.
Making Black people feel menaced and unsafe is as critical to the dogma of full-spectrum white safety as being accommodating of all white demands, desires and delusions.
For the past five months the only refugees the USA has accepted are white South Africans fleeing equality & safety meanwhile they are disappearing or strapping ankle monitors on any Haitian they can get ahold of. It needs to be understood how thoroughly connected these two things are.
Conservative views aren't being suppressed here, they are just A) not being boosted and B) incredibly unpopular because they are odious
SARS-CoV-2 did not come from a lab. There is no evidence pointing to laboratory origins. There’s been a massive disinformation campaign to convince the public otherwise. It’s scary how effective that campaign has been.
Man...the racism of the people who hate El-Sayed is on another level
I’m so sick of people using hypothetical Black voters as human shields for their own opinions
