I have spent the last two and a half years with this sword of Damocles over my head. The word echoes in your mind. Cancer. People ask you, casually, "how are you" and you struggle not to reply I HAVE CANCER. I seriously underestimated the fucking JOY of knowing it's gone. 2/3

This does indeed change everything. If you can *do stuff* while you're in the transporter stream then that strongly implies there's no actual break in the process. That might very well change everything. (I would always rather be correct than "win" an argument.)

In Realm of Fear they physically grab other physical things inside the transporter beam and bring them out of the beam with them. It was a fully continuous process. The franchise is wildly inconsistent on how these things work.
I love the idea that–among all the various obvious possibilities–philosophy is a thing that can kill you.
Orion Kidder@orionkidder.bsky.social · 5h agoUltimately, I cannot say that I am the same man I was ten years ago, in any sense of that phrasing. That's a whole different guy. So did he "die"? I guess he did! What killed him? Time. Biology. Psychology. Maybe philosophy.
I am an English professor who studies these genres, which is just to say that I've read and thought a lot about this, and the conclusion I've come to is: ALL FICTION IS "FANTASY." The difference is not how real they are but what genre conventions they happen to use.
I love this thread about matter “transportation”. It is rational & logical, instead of fantastical & philosophical. I commented on it at the end, so read the whole thread… and then stay for the commentary, ha ha…

This is what writing *is.* What the reader experiences in just the output of all this backend structure that authors create. If your characters are randomly generated by an algorithm and not a product of your thinking, then you’re not actually writing.

Sean Kelly@storyslug.bsky.social · 6h agoDespite all the meme jokes about transporters killing you and sending off your clone to finish your mission, that's not really how the transporters on Star Trek work: They convert your matter into energy and then *transmit* that *same* energy to a location to be reassembled as matter.
I mean this sincerely: I think pro Israel people really need to begin internalizing that this is not a fringe opinion anymore and in fact is very statistically likely to be the average view of any brown Democratic candidate for office or any candidate under the age of 50

I don't actually see any evidence of this? As far as I can tell most academics response to the Wilson piece (those who have seen it at all) was "huh, fair enough - I liked the film tho". I'm guessing this isn't registering because low key calm responses aren't flashy or memorable.

Another wonderfully written book that makes my blood boil it's Enshittification. If you want a stronger understanding of why tech has gotten worse and what we can do about it this is an essential read. It also is the only book I've read that recommends *light* copyright infringement which is fun!

It needs to be understood how thoroughly connected these two things are.
