An acrobat ant worker tends sunflower aphids for honeydew. Austin, Texas. I think this photo works compositionally because of the superimposition of a single ant against the repeated backdrop of almost Xeroxed aphids.
OK class: which is the male (♂️) and which is the female (♀️)? [BTW - these are the smallest members of this family of flies I have ever seen!] #FlySchool2026
Just two little snags on an oak branch, definitely no treehoppers or anything.
One of the first cool guys we found was this jumping spider, which looked very much like a pseudoscorpion. I found him crawling on my leg while we were eating lunch under a mango tree.

Be a dipterist. Be in Costa Rica for #FlySchool2026. See a muscoid #fly perching on a leaf. Tell student so they can collect it. Success!! Wait a minute 🤔 That's not a fly, but weevil mimicking one! This was so convincing, even rapidly moving & poking its wings out 🥰 #Curculionidae: cf. #Mnemynurus
I love shooting spiders in bisexual lighting. They just look so good. I mean look at her. She’s a natural!

I'm not the only one who loves ant mimic salticids 👀 That weird little thing hugging the back of the spider's head is a mantidfly baby - it will remain attached to this female Peckhamia until she lays her eggs, and then it'll borrow some eggs permanently. #PHORESY!

This 2012 electron microscope video is from James Tyrwhitt-Drake, a scientist at University of Victoria’s Advanced Microscopy Facility. In order, you're looking at: An amphipod (~5 mm = 5000 microns) A diatom (50 microns) A bacteria (1 micron). Life at every scale! (📷: James Tyrwhitt-Drake)
It's true, what could be better than being a fly, though? I mean, look at them
“I have discovered I am a fly, that we are all flies, that nothing matters. It's a great load off my life, for I don't mind being such a micro-organism-to me the honour is sufficient of belonging to the universe-such a great universe, so grand a scheme of things.”

Still a considerable way to go on this, but the exceedingly clever @mathbug.bsky.social, @tonionio.bsky.social, and @eggtist.bsky.social all correctly identified our friend as a Green Hairstreak. Not remotely misdirected by the red (or indeed yellow) herring of the underpainting. 😁
I wonder if anyone might like to hazard a guess as to our lepidopteran friend's identity?

Not a natural sharer, but just wanted to say...a year and a half ago, I got the biggest single order of my life from a famous artist I deeply admire. (No pressure!) Took me *forever* to finish. But they were patient (and so kind), I delivered, and they are happy. This whole thing might work! 😅
