Extremely stubborn and suspicious.

Though it is only 3:10, the combination of 1) getting up too early 2) to tour an electrical contractor then 3) hustle to attend a fairly important but soul-sucking meeting all before 2:00 has apparently exhausted my brain and no useful work is coming out of the pipeline. I surrender.

Chicago needs 15 million new cops to fund 15 million new NASCAR races. We're turning Lake Michigan into the first fully aquatic data center. Every kindergarten will be equipped with ToddlerSpotter. It's not ShotSpotter! It's better—SWAT will be alerted every time naptime needs to be enforced

I always enjoy when a new contractor comes to our house for the first time and we get to watch the hope and joy slowly leave their body. (I kid. Most of them spend their whole career working on houses just as full of nasty surprises as ours is. Welcome to New England.)

If you'd like something even more dangerous, our archive is so old that we don't use these fancy modern rolling stacks. Ours are attached to a motorised chain that runs the length of the room. This means sometimes they like to move by themselves just a little, enough to keep you on edge.

Rolling stacks in the archive with some lovely old archive boxes on them. On the right of the image you can see the handles that have to be pulled to move the stacks, activating the connection with the chain beneath the floor.

i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys

those rolling stacks you'll find in any big state school library

It was so damn depressing to watch every TV writer who was willing and eager to have open, intelligent conversations about their process get hounded off social by a combination of aggressive stans and belligerent wannabes defending the right to be a shithead to creatives

I keep thinking about the discourse from the other day suggesting writers are gatekeeping writing information for ourselves and I just think back to 2019 when every writer was out there giving away writing advice until one by one each stopped because social media blows and we can't have nice things.

just gonna say that if I ask you during a software demo how accessible your product is and you respond with "what do you mean, 'accessible,'" that's the wrong response

Going out to get lunch today because I won't be able to go out on my usual day tomorrow was a fine idea for my mental health. It was, however, a horrible idea for actually getting work done this afternoon.

"Your teammates are trying to reach you in Microsoft Teams" No, my grandboss is trying to reach me in Teams because he's the only person I actually have workplace contact with who hasn't gotten a clue that I don't keep Teams running and check it only under duress whereas I reply to email instantly

Y’all are all trying to get me to reread “There Will Come Soft Rains” and listen, that story fucked me up when I was seven and has fucked me up every time I’ve read it since then, I am AT QUOTA

sometimes fantasy authors come up with the concept "there are things older than history and prehistory.. otherworldly things the human mind cant comprehend" and for Lovecraft that means "monster so freaky it drives you insane" and for Tolkien it means "some guy named Tom with an extremely fine wife"
