"Will I be able to see the crash?" Probably not, but that doesn't mean friends in the Americas shouldn't try (daylight for those in Europe): look to the eastern limb of the Einstein crater. The @eso.org VLT will observe it & NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is taking before and after images! 🔭🧪🛰️

45m tall Melville Monument hit by city’s highest altitude “coning” yet

EDINBURGH'S "cones" craze has taken another twist, after someone planted a traffic cone (nearly) at the top of one of the capital's most imposing monuments. The culprit is thought to have "broke in the door illegally" at the base of the 45m tall Melville Monument over the weekend, and climbed up to the platform where the large statue of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, stands. Although the vandal did not quite manage to hoist the cone onto Dundas's head, Edinburgh residents were "impressed" by their dedication to the "coning" craze, which has been criticised for damaging some of the city's historic monuments.

Edinburgh’s Cramond Island hit by large fire

CRAMOND Island, a popular tourist destination in the north-west of the capital, was hit by a large grass fire on Wednesday, as a fire crew was called. The fire, on the north end of the island, had mostly petered out by the time a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crew was able to respond at around 1pm on Wednesday, although the ground was still smouldering in places and was hot to the touch. The fire appliance had to wait on the mainland, while the crew made their way to the island via the narrow causeway.

I can never resist getting inside an old lime kiln. This one was near Newton Abbott. The view up through the hole in the top of it to the overhanging trees on the ledge above is, I have to assume, even better than listening to the second Doors album on acid.

A carved sandstone figure hidden for more than 1,600 years has been discovered near Hadrian’s Wall. The protective spirit found by archaeologists at the Fort of Vindolanda, near Hexham, Northumberland, is depicted on a well-preserved 3rd-century Roman relief. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/07...

Edinburgh Zoo’s wee baby capybara, Bru, has just been weighed as part of his recent health check.
