My lab studies sex differences in metabolism and metabolic disease in flies and mice. #sexdifferences #Drosophila #lipid #insulin #betacell

Unless something wonky happens, tomorrow will mark five months of not being misgendered once in my new job. This sense of inclusion is a huge part of why I feel so comfy here, so please consider being equally supportive in your own work environment - a lot of people will appreciate it!

Can a single brain cell decide whether to eat or not? 🧠🪰 Turns out... yes. And we found it in the fruit fly. A pair of neurons called SELKs (subesophageal leucokinin neurons) can drive feeding behavior in both directions. They promote it or suppress it. Here's how: 🧵

Beyond delighted to share our amazing collaboration with Thierry Alquier's lab @alquierthierry.bsky.social on a conserved role for neuronal lipid droplets in regulating energy homeostasis in vivo led by Celena Cherian, Romane Manceau, Danie Majeur, and Colin Miller www.nature.com/articles/s42... /1

Neuronal lipid droplets play a conserved and sex-biased role in maintaining whole-body energy homeostasis - Nature Metabolism

In vivo regulation of neuronal lipid droplet formation mediates whole-body energy homeostasis in a sex-specific manner in Drosophila and mice.

Now published as version of record at @elife.bsky.social ! Layers of Immunity: Deconstructing the Drosophila effector response. The tools are now deposited in the VDRC (link ⬇️) elifesciences.org/articles/107... shop.vbc.ac.at/vdrc_store/d... #Drosophila #IDsky #SymbioSky #Infection #Immunology

eLife Assessment
This work provides one of the first important attempts to look at Drosophila immune responses against bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens in a way that combines the roles of four major arms in immunity (Imd signaling, Toll signaling, phagocytosis, and melanization) rather than studying them separately. The findings are compelling and the tools provided can be used as they are, or built upon, in various contexts.

Excited to finally announce this work which has been in the pipeline for 5 years: Layers of Immunity. Faustine et al. made a set of immune mutants covering 4 major immune modules in #Drosophila, deleting melanization (ROS), phagocytosis, and both Toll & Imd NF-kB responses. What did we find? 1/n 🧵

🪰 folks! I spoke to the Transmitter about FlyBase. As noted at flybase.org, bridge $ ran out and many staff were laid off. Good news is stopgap contributions will keep core FlyBase operations active. But community support remains essential. Please donate @FlyBase and share! 1/2 tinyurl.com/FlyBase

FlyBase secures funding for year, but future still uncertain

The FlyBase team’s fundraising efforts have proven successful in the short term, but restoration of its federal grant remains uncertain.

Endosymbiont control through non-canonical immune signaling and gut metabolic remodeling

Burgmer et al. show that the pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) PGRP-LC and PGRP-LE repress key metabolic functions in the Drosophila midgut. These regulations occur independently of canonical immun...

Studies of prohormone convertase knockouts in mouse islets reveal plasticity in proglucagon processing to support intra-islet α cell-to-β cell communication, normally dominated by glucagon secretion www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

α cells use both PC1/3 and PC2 to process proglucagon peptides and control insulin secretion

α cells can generate and secrete both glucagon and GLP-1 with distinct processing enzymes to control metabolism.

Very proud of Celena Cherian in the lab, who contributed data to www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Briefly, Celena showed female fat body cells have higher ribosomal protein expression and more protein synthesis than males. This difference persists even after cell size is accounted for!

Cell type specific allometry controls sex-differences in Drosophila body size

Species and sex-specific differences in organ size are fundamental features of animal biology, yet the mechanisms that drive these differences remain debated. Adult female Drosophila are larger than m...
