Fraud and abuse happen. How frequently they happen is a function of management system effectiveness. Great series of annual reports from U of Portsmouth 10+ years comparing rates across health systems. Generally lower in public systems. researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/files...

Although a majority of voters say there is at least some fraud in Medicaid, when asked to choose a priority, most prioritize protecting access to care for eligible people over preventing fraud. This includes most Democrats and independents, and about half of Republicans: https://on.kff.org/44suv8B
well, I never expected to be published in a Stanford journal, but the McKnight Foundation asked me write my thesis to the philanthropic world after the MN ICE surge: when there is an emergency, just... give money to people on the ground doing the actual work. as fast as possible. radical, I know.
Giving Can Be Simple (And During a Crisis, It Must Be) (SSIR)
When the village cannot wait, philanthropy must learn from community.

Will have comments on this later. But worth a read now! (3-5 min read. tl;dr Taylor Farm's lettuce almost certainly went to way more places than just Taco Bell & Sysco, & those retailers need to speak up.)
This, from food safety attorney Bill Marler, is so much better than anything I've seen from the FDA.
It took 20 minutes of being on the phone to learn that our local storage facilities’ idea of accessible is putting a black strap on the unit door so you can more easily grab it open or closed. Me: “I can’t physically bend down and lift it up though?” Them: [shrug shrug shrug]
Let me repost this I made a case study on technological revolutions, gender , race and the role of marketing and propaganda
the real story behind this viral photo is even more heartbreaking than the one the public created.
The Woman in the Photo Wanted to Be Alone. Instead, She Went Viral.
America saw what it wanted to see on the face of its newest icon. And everyone saw it wrong.

The eternal question of whether it’s aging or disability (or both!) rises again as I ponder how this pinched shoulder nerve came to be and how long my left arm might be numb.
The Prairieland cartoonist/zinester who got 30 years for making a zine. Still short of the goal for funding his fight against this total travesty of justice. A gullible rural jury brainwashed by rightwing media, and the most fascist judge in the country. Donate & push this over the finish line.

hey, this is a fairly nerdy news item, but you should absolutely know about it. (looks like there are links in other posts in the thread.) the Post Office is really contemplating not delivering ballots unless states expose their voters' data to DOJ. I hate saying read that again but, read it again
The USPS’s proposed rule—which among other things will force it to *refuse to deliver ballots* for states that don’t fork over their voter rolls to the White House—drew opposition from congressional Democrats, the NAACP, and its own union.
Deeply displeased with the universe. I only got to meet Emi a few years ago at a mutual friend’s memorial – I really enjoyed meeting up with her, indulging Kitti’s requests for cuddles, and hearing her talk about Aileen’s. But cancer strikes again. To carry on her work: gofundme.com/f/support-ai...

PDX: the COVID + Health Resource Library (CHRL or “choral”) is popping up again at APANO’s Open Studios on Friday 6/26! It’s a mask-required drop-in style BIPOC art space to “experiment, play, explore creativity, and cultivate connections.”
Turns out an echocardiogram can kind of suck if you’re not feeling great and have a slightly (clinically insignificantly) tilty heart + ribs too narrow and close together for the ultrasound probe to fit through. “I’m having trouble locating your heart” is just not a sentence you expect.

One of the hardest things to learn is that communication, confrontation, conflict and aggression are DIFFERENT And people aren’t “avoidant” just because they don’t want to deal with attacks AND just because you have a good Pr package and a soft voice doesn’t make you NOT the abuser or enabler
You've probably seen the word #Landback somewhere and instantly had some feelings. It sounds blunt, which is part of why a lot of people tend to have an instant reaction or jump to some very problematic misconceptions about what it means. So, let's talk Landback, from my POV and work.

"Hallucination" implies conscious experience that chatbots lack. We need another term for the specific kind of error where they make things up out of whole cloth. It's not lying because they don't know anything.
Speaking of which — when AI chatbots make mistakes, call them that: mistakes, errors, inaccuracies. “Hallucinations” is an unnecessarily jargony term that anthropomorphizes the chatbots. (5/x)

i think it's critical to understand that taiwan is not baby china and is not a freer or more democratic version of china. taiwan is its complicated, multiply colonized, justice-seeking self. it is not interchangeable with china, which is itself an incredibly diverse place.
She's right and it's not even just young folks. There are grown folks who are uncomfortable with journalists asking follow-up questions. It's like people wanna feel like they have access not answers, and they're conflict averse.
She is 100% correct. Interviewing is a skill and requires effort and preparation. Most of these folks are just yapping into a microphone.
Today, I talk with @tanuja.bsky.social about rupture and repair in our movements. This is the first of two episodes about conflict, how we process it, and how we can keep our relationships and organizations strong.

Maya Angelou was completely right “People will forget what you said but never how you made them feel” Problem is entitlement, privilege and trauma means folks lose the understanding of discomfort as part of growth as opposed to “feeling bad” And blame the safest person not the source
