I don’t know if it’s that book, but her “he moved around her area” is the most hilarious sex-writing ever. That and all the references to “her breasts tightening.”

In our next newsletter, I'm going to write about this pernicious race/ranking/leaderboard metaphor that's pervaded everything and put so many people in a quantified, zero-sum mindset that makes everything worse. e.g. There's no AI race. Categories are more arbitrary that we want to believe, etc.
I feel like ‘everyone’s convinced you aren’t dating’ accurately describes a few chapters toward the end of Pride and Prejudice.
yay I thought I saved this when I first happened upon it— shout out to Mr. & Mrs. Smith (reboot) and The Roses but we need more. Bimbo CEO!
Today's the 1st anniversary of surviving the stroke that nearly killed me. I'm still in rehab, still relearning how to walk, but I'm doing a lot better and close to getting out. Details on what happened and the future of Criminal Intentions now in my FAQ: blackmagicblues.com/faq/

Welcome to the longest FAQ on the planet. Now with a soupçon of snark. Edit: I’ve added the info about my stroke, and then the regular FAQ resumes after that. CW below for vomit, near-death, …

Anyway I would love if you or your library would buy/share A Second Sight with folks. We write books b/c we want you to read them, b/c the subjects matter deeply to us, and these scams promise the readers and the marketing/sales we often have to generate ourselves. It's all a bit harrowing!
A Second Sight: How the Wonder and Vision of Black Mediamakers Push America Toward Freedom
"I have been waiting for a book like this, and I’m so glad it's here." — Clint Smith, author of How the Word is PassedSince the nation’s founding, Black Americans have had a unique perspective on the ...

my favorite is still the one I got that claimed that it was from Reese Witherspoon, who was happy to announce that her book club was taking a hard pivot from light fiction to instead focus on academic works of history about nuclear weapons
Here's more on different versions of this scam. It is wild (and a policy failure) that essentially our whole electronic lives from cell phones to email are just enshittification and fraud now

but they already made a historically accurate version of the odyssey?
I've gotten dozens of these for books I didn't even write (written by other Matthews Francis) so I can only imagine what actual authors get
Since A Second Sight came out I've received about 2-3 of these scam emails a week. They are not only profoundly annoying but obviously prey on author's passions and attachment to their work. In some cases they impersonate real people at legit organizations.
the whole "women's sports exist to protect women from men" framing is hilarious, given that a lot of these divisions were initially formed because men were deeply embarrassed any time a woman beat them at a sport olympic shooting was mixed gender right up until a woman won the gold
This bears repeating. Navigating SNAP benefits in Georgia was practically a full-time job. One of the things about being poor, doing odd jobs and gig work, is that income changes every week, which doubles the amount of paperwork required. The laws are based on annual income, but the rules aren’t.
any time benefits require paperwork, or even a level of functioning that can accommodate filling out a simple form, people will slip through the cracks. their kids will slip through the cracks. I don't give a shit how easy that single form is. requiring it = kids starving
LMAO Jane has trouble believing that Darcy and Elizabeth are engaged because from the perspective of most of the Bennet family, he’s the gloomy young man babadooking in a low-lit corner at all the fancy parties, annoying their beloved Lizzie.
“I knew enough of your disposition to be certain, that had you been absolutely, irrevocably decided against me, you would have acknowledged it to Lady Catherine, frankly and openly.” OH he’s got her number 😭😭😭
“You have widely mistaken my character, if you think I can be worked on by such persuasions as these.”

Oh she’s coming in to have a fight over which ship ought to be canon
“This puffed up Pomeranian bitch barges into MY house and insults MY stompingg grounds and is rude to MY mother wants me to say that I am not engaged to to her nephew. I will not be doing that.” This oppositional defiant energy! I am here for it!
I imagine Mrs Bennet has instructed one of the servants to affix foliage to themselves and Solid Snake army crawl out to wherever Elizabeth and Lady CdB are chatting to eavesdrop.
Chapter 54 — Elizabeth wonders why in the dickens Darcy even showed up with Bingley if he wasn’t even going to talk to her, and I am also wondering this. What was that, man? What was that?

Historian friend was reading a civil war era letter in an archive, the letter said “In this envelope I include my smallpox scabs” and sure enough there they were. Had to call CDC for a hazmat team.

just got an email from my (former) chair that the university has acted & the state has approved the formal closure of my department. this was done without any faculty input on the decision or the process, & has ended a vibrant, growing (!), humanities department that won teaching and research awards
Anyway, happy Monday! The Dean is shutting down my department - Religion & Culture, the only 1 of is kind in the country & home to the innovative Major in Humanities for Public Service. There is no immediate budgetary or political pressure for this decision

And lord knows I've loved me some Lionel Messi, but also this
like the way Messi is just magically absolved for the shitty conduct of his teammates on and off the pitch is really something. he's the captain!
