"Donald Trump’s disgusting racism is what he uses to convince his supporters to ignore his pathetic job performance. And it works. Trump is objectively bad at running the government, but he’s objectively good at running a Klan rally." @elienyc.bsky.social nails it here

Nothing Works in Trump’s America—Except for Racism

In this week’s Elie v. US, our justice correspondent explores Trump’s stunning incompetence. Plus: baseball is back—for now.

🕰️ With the year coming to an end, we asked a selection of Poetry Review contributors to give us their favourite poetry books and pamphlets of 2025. Next is Chris Arning's pick: High Jump as Icarus Story by Gustav Parker Hibbett (Banshee Press). Thank you, Chris!

Chris Arning recommends High Jump as Icarus Story by Gustav Parker Hibbett and says: I just thought - what an audacious conceit to pattern a whole volume on the concept of the high jump. There is a lot of daring work in it.

I'm sure that Jimmy Wales has many bad opinions. But Wikipedians aren't a pro-Wales cult. He's not growing rich off clicks. Some very rich, very awful people are determined to discredit the last mega-website that isn't run for profit and being actively made worse in the pursuit of that objective.

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

We need to treat social media as humanity's demented id - which is pretty much what it is - and stop feeling like everything on here is a thought out policy position that requires a response. Everyone on the internet is basically mad & drunk & has a real job/family somewhere they're neglecting.

Verification means we can establish what is true in ways we can trust, through journalism, science, courts, audits, transparency. Deliberation means we can reason together across differences, in parliaments, the press, social movements. Accountability means power can be held to account.

To expand on some of the points I make in this, we often talk about democracy as if it lives or dies on elections. But elections are just one part of the picture. At its core, a healthy democracy depends on three functions working together: Verification, Deliberation, and Accountability, aka VDA.

Here's my interview with Amol Rajan on BBC Radio 4's Radical about what's going wrong with democracy and how we can fix it www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Again, why critical thinking skills are crucial in education. If people are bombarded with a constant stream of algorithmically selected content that engages them emotionally and we aren't equipping them with critical thinking skills from an early age then things like this are the inevitable outcome

think this is sort of interesting as actually.....no you probably didn't need to do "more research" into it? you just had to trust the state and local authorities to know better than you when it came to vaccinating your child? not good that the internet has killed faith in institutions!
