Difficult to quantify losses like being able to say good bye at the gate. I feel like this would be really interesting to do an inventory of. i struggle a bit to find products which existed 40 years ago that are better now. There are many new things which are pluses.

i assume they realize the open weight models are out of reach and want to enforce ideological alignment in the commercial models
James Ball@jamesrball.com · 19h agoNgl, I am a bit confused by open weight models being subject to *less* scrutiny than closed ones. Once an open weight model is out in the world, there's no pulling to back or tweaking it. That's not quite true of closed models. So…generally, you'd assume they'd get additional oversight.

We’ll have a range of representations which are denotationally equivalent but more or less appropriate for certain tasks. The “source” will move to something flexible in the middle, while humans will interact with more ergonomic languages and agents will consume some load-bearing goop.

Part of the problem with this argument is that that “math” in Marx is a totalizing overreach, an attempt to suppress competing ideas.

ae@aelkus.bsky.social · 2d agoi think the tvtropes approach appeals to people bc it allows you to slice anything into little pieces, which can be examined independently of the context. this works for people with short attention spans and need to use wikis and archives to interpret media
Stuff like this sometimes does drive me to benchmarking. Like I know it looks bad but is it “wrong” wrong or just unaesthetic?

I think part of this was it was a bad experience, but it was curated. It had some infernal logic to it that you as a viewer couldn’t quite apprehend… but it was real.
Brendel@brendelbored.bsky.social · 3d agoIt’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better
it’s not even like anyone is saying “remember plastic dividers and washing your hands a lot?” It’s specifically the stuff that actually worked like reducing contact, masks, etc… Wierd counter pressure on factualness.
