Truly hate how badly the well has now been poisoned for every kind of technology involved in or adjacent to what's been forced under the "ai" umbrella. Neural networks are in fact really special and amazing. Generative algorithms have uses that don't run off a tesla data centers.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Day 1 of the strike by the workers of UCU Edinburgh against the manufactured deficit (which is not really a deficit), and against a senior management earning millions while staff disappear and education suffers. Solidarity against this parasitical form of management of our higher education.

The UK is likely to try to reduce ADHD & autism diagnoses this week even though its own National Health Service funded a report saying ADHD is underdiagnosed & undertreated. Autism's criteria are already narrowed. See my anchor post & gifted article previewing UK report: inews.co.uk/news/claims-...

ADHD is not being overdiagnosed, major Government report set to find

Landmark report expected to rule out mass overdiagnosis but warn support can be hard to obtain

Cannot tell you how much I hate this & how ashamed & angry I am that @ukri.org have taken this step. We KNOW this sort of gAI is socially biased, we KNOW it favours slopAI output over human-written. Our research landscape is falling apart due to underfunding, & they do this? it's *appalling*

Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky

I am writing to let you know that, unfortunately, your application was not successful.

Review process

As part of the initial triage of the 179 proposals submitted to this call, each was assessed using an AI-based review. Every proposal was read independently by several different AI models against the same seven criteria used to shape this call (including cyber security relevance, research quality and novelty, importance of the problem addressed, feasibility of the project plan, likely outputs and impact, value for money, and responsible research practice), with each model asked to give a score and a written justification with supporting quotations from the text. To guard against any one model's idiosyncrasies, we also ran a second, independent process in which different AI models debated the merits and weaknesses of each proposal before reaching a judgement, again against the same criteria. Scores from both processes were combined to produce an overall ranking.

This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review. Projects selected for funding were drawn from those that progressed to the full human review stage. We recognise that AI-assisted assessment is a new and evolving part of the review process, and we are continuing to evaluate how well it aligns with the judgements of human reviewers on this call. We will soon produce a document detailing our method, so that others can build upon it and improve it.

Feedback on your application

Your application was not selected to progress beyond the AI triage stage. To provide transparency on the outcome of this assessment, we are sharing below the scores (out of 5) from each of the two AI review processes described above, together with the mean score across the two processes.

The University of Edinburgh is a world-class institution and our members are determined to protect it. With an estimated 1,800 jobs at risk, staff are ready to strike for 25 days to defend jobs and the future of the university. Management can end this dispute: rule out compulsory redundancies.

The absolute scourge of the ‘informal meeting’ - a technique management now regularly use to avoid accountability. Always ask what ‘informal’ means, always demand the full formal process with union support, and always remember that it is definitely not an ‘informal meeting’ if HR are there.

'The University and College Union (UCU)’s Edinburgh branch said staff had been called into “informal meetings at less than 24 hours' notice” and told not to bring union representatives.'

This is worrying IMO. Whilst research that benefits civilians can be mutually beneficial for the army eg work in malaria vaccines this agreement to siphon NIH funds meant for clinical and applied research to DOD is very concerning.

Revealed: inside the US military's plan to tap huge sums from the NIH

An agreement paves the way for hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of projects to be transferred from the NIH’s institute for infectious diseases to the Department of Defense.

The total failure of VCs and 'senior' managers/administrators/governors across the UK to develop a sustainable funding model is a national scandal. Every VC quote in the press boils down to shrugging shoulders and 'sector-wide problem, innit? Nothing I can do.', while rewarding themselves £100ks.

'A prolonged fall in the number of international students applying to study in the UK means “the wheels are rapidly falling off” the student loan-funded higher education system in England, sector experts have warned.' The world's 2nd best university system being killed by malign neglect. 1/3

People using someone's life as a political football are now saying his death shouldn't be used as a political football. Arday's death is political. It's one of the longest running polical ideologies in British politics. The one so much wealth is built on: anti Black racism.
