tepid take for letterer appreciation day: if manga translators ever get a 2x raise (hah), letterers deserve 3x. 4x if we're talking full SFX/signage retouch. and more for rush simuls where they have like ~24h to get it done. anything less is unlivable, and an insult to their time and skills

Been lettering manga for 9 years, every year without a cost of living bump is basically a demotion 😌 I'm also not 24 anymore, so I can't brute force these inherent issues by just working harder. Unfortunately, I think for a lot of publishers, freelance work is out of sight out of mind

The majority of freelancers working in this industry cannot provide for their families on freelancing income alone and rely on a separate full-time job, or a spouse's income. All while the publishers are raking in the cash. It is not right!

LRT: there’s a reason everyone who works in Japanese media localization is rallying around Jan’s statement here. Anime, manga, and games are seemingly bigger than ever and none of the creatives involved in getting that media into English are making any money.

As the money rises for manga sales, the rates fall. I have known Jan as a dear friend for years--she has been to my house. I took her to my favorite dive Ethiopian restaurant. The courage she exhibited tonight was nothing less than heroic.

Jan is the hero we need the net60 thing must be mindblowing to anyone with a "normal" job. I often have to chase down invoices that are 3, 6, 10 months late, because some in-house chucklehead forgot to press a button. If you don't have a rainy day $$$ cushion, this line of work is a highwire act.
