THAT is the problem with "better than nothing". MTPE fan TL is worse than nothing. It's actively detrimental to the games supposedly being translated and the community at large. It makes players associate the game with slop. It forestalls good-faith translations. It wastes everyone's time.

Apparently the AI bros are on another round of "Hatsune Miku is AI, checkmate luddites" so this is just a reminder that the singer behind Miku was paid and still earns royalties, and beyond that, Miku is nothing more than a MIDI soundboard with advanced pitch converter options, it is not genAI.

Trying to keep words like "nakama" in Japanese, on the other hand, is pure Orientalism. It is done to exoticize something, and try to pretend it is something different than the very normal and widespread concept the word represents. It is an attempt to "other" the work.
