it’s #ToothyTuesday! some of my fav teeth are colugo lower incisors. these teeth are pectinate or “fan-like,” exhibiting many long, thin projections used for grooming! while colugos are sometimes called flying lemurs, they’re not actual lemurs: lemurs = primates, and colugos = dermopterans!

This image depicts the anterior, or front part, of the mandible, or lower jaw, of the colugo. The three incisors on each side of the jaw - especially the middle two teeth on each side of the jaw - are pectinate, or “fan-like” in form, with tooth crowns exhibiting many long, thin projections that colugos use for grooming. 'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

Oh, this is wild, LMAO. Everyone, listen to this episode! The tl;dr for the peeps in academia: Remove the comments from your TeX files before uploading them to the arXiv. And don't put any sensitive data in there in the first place.

Hey! You! We made a @neverpo.st and put it out. Today! It's about people accidentally publishing gossip, API tokens, SSNs and CC #'s with their physics and math research papers. Also news about Max Shorts, France banning social media for teens, the Delhi Jantar Mantar protests and more.

Hey Bluesky! Emerging from my dissertation-formatting cave to share that I defended my PhD last week! So many incredible people helped me reach this point, especially over the last few months as I scrambled to finish in time. I’m lucky to be surrounded by such good friends.

The cover slide from my dissertation defense talk. The background image is of a river flowing through rainforest in Ranomafana National Park, and along the sides are photos of various birds I studied in-hand. The title text reads: “Ecological diversification across taxonomic scale in three adaptive radiations of Malagasy birds”. Below that are listed my name (Anya Auerbach), my advisor Sushma Reddy, and my committee: Sharon Jansa, Keith Barker, Kieran McNulty, and David Fox.

Saying a version of "I don't know" and then outlining the steps you would take *to* know is a nearly-universal requirement for passing your qualifying exams as a PhD student. It was also a requirement for getting hired as a Supplemental Instructor when/where I was an undergrad.

As smoke chokes eastern US cities (again), this is your daily reminder that as recent as 2023, an NSF panel rejected our grant about wildfire smoke impacts because they did not see the connection between wildfire smoke and climate change.

Timeline cleanse: American pikas calling to each other in the Canadian Rockies. Sound on to hear the loud “MEEP!” made by these potato sized alpine mammals. They’re way off under those cliffs but the calls travel. *this is likely a niche post, but it’s one of my favorite sounds in the world.

Please join me in supporting this Legal Defense Fund for MN Anti-ICE Organizers! Just like in Chicago, the DOJ is trying to make examples of people who LEGALLY resisted this administration’s reign of terror. (See their story.) Let’s fight back!! chuffed.org/project/1865...
