I am a data scientist, researcher, engineer, sometime-traveler, and African SFF author. I am fascinated by the frontiers of human progress: innovation vs ignorance; wealth vs poverty, migration vs stasis. I also drink a great deal of coffee.

The last time so many people had to be evacuated from one place was in 1940, for Dunkirk. Conducted against us by our environment, the climate crisis is a war we've imposed on ourselves. The next century will be full of pointless suffering

What I don't get about AI •company• hypervaluations, hyperinvestments & hyperexpectations is they only work if they have a moat. But they never licenced anything they needed to build their stuff. If it's ok to break the law to do this, they have no moat. Anyone can do what they did, & they will. So?

Oh, I don't know. This Other Eden by Ben Elton had billionaire media tycoons promoting escape shelters while deliberately causing environmental disasters for views. The rich paid for nicer air, & people tried to achieve fame by committing violence on famous people. I think he got it about right.

No science fiction could have prepared us for just how stupid the end of the world can be. "The environment was on the brink of collapse, and so, rather than deal with that, we burned what fuel we had left getting computers to scam each other for money."

It’s one of the great ironies that people across the world who’ve spent years and years whipping up hate and dividing countries are now complaining that people hate them.

I feel like portraying it as a fringe theological dispute between catholic sects over the 2nd vatican council and finger pointing over who's a heretic, rather than as a conflict with a fringe far right sect that says Jews are going to hell and Muslims are rapists hides the general interest aspect.
