107 ave seems to be the project the city is holding up as a win. I have serious doubts that council/admin has the guts to make this safe. Intersections including at the roundabout will have to be seriously improved. Level crossings added and restricted turns.

There is an initiative called "Week Without Driving" which asks elected officials to stop driving for 1 week to learn what mobility in the city is like for 1/3rd of the population, so they can make better infrastructure choices: weekwithoutdriving.org #yeg #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli #urbanism #yegbike

Seen some tutorials lately on the best place for a person on a bicycle at a multilane intersection like this, and friends, the actual best place to be is at city hall every day asking WTF we're still telling people on bikes to "just act like cars" rather than building safe infrastructure

aerial view schematic of a three-lane, one-way street approaching an intersection. It appears to be a standard 4-way intersection with no bicycle infrastructure. Each general purpose lane is dedicated (left lane for left turns, center lane for going straight, right lane for right turns). There are dashed lines showing the ideal path for a cyclist to follow to navigate the intersection from each of the three lanes.
From the perspective of immediate harm reduction, the dashed lines are correct (unless the cyclist feels safer on the sidewalk). But it's a bone headed road design and we should be doing much, much better if we don't want to kill people.

Tell me you hate bikes and don’t know the joy of riding them without telling me you hate bikes and don’t know the joy of riding them. (The image is a response to my previous post about using one bike to transport a second bike)

Reply guy reply saying I should own just one bike

Your friendly neighborhood car dependency researcher here. If we want to get people out of car dependency, we need to let people who are car dependent talk to us about what's keeping them in car dependency. It's really not enough to say, "you should be less dependent on your car" I've tried.

UCP minister Devin Dreeshen's resume includes: - campaigning for Trump - drinking on the job - mocking worker safety, before workers died - refusing to oppose separatism This is the top-notch guy Danielle Smith handpicked to ban bike lanes in Alberta

Biking should be considered a Third Place. It’s very social. Taxiing my eldest to D&D in the bakfiets, I yelled “you’re parked in a bike lane” at a driver and said hi to the mayor, who was biking the other direction. Didn’t react fast enough to offer the mayor an ice cream. @andrewknack.bsky.social

Gosh. I thought the Montreal bike survey (version #2) was biased. Alberta is not even trying to seem neutral. This is purely “tell us which bike lane you want us to beat up”.

Hey #yegbike #yycbike -- can we flood this portal with suggestions to put NEW bike lanes? And yes, sometimes they're not done well. But most of them are great for those who want to use active transport, including young kids. (can't repost b/c Shields Up has me blocked) #yeg #yyc

Specifically for Rutherford, pointing out that now other residents are going to ABSOLUTELY ask to get this done for their infrastructure installs. We could have seen this coming a mile away with Delton and Grovenor complaints. I bet those Ward offices are about to get a flood of inquiries.

No one else thought my labelling of this evening’s dinner was a bad attempt at a math joke. It was my daughter who told me which buns were pastrami and not pastrami

Four buns wrapped in tin foil. The two in the foreground are labelled P and NP

Someone moved one of the Toronto barriers in my favourite modal filter to make the gap for drivers even wider. Wouldn’t want to hurt drivers’ feelings by preventing them from driving everywhere

A residential intersection with concrete barriers as a modal filter. One is askew leaving a larger gap for vehicles to pass through. Sign says do not enter except bicycles

Place your bets! After resurfacing is finished, how long until the bike lane is repainted? What per cent of trips before the bike lane is painted will I encounter vehicles parked where the lane should be? #yegbike

Street with incomplete asphalt resurfacing. A painted bike gutter can be seen in the incomplete section

Not sure if this is a hot take, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Public input can provide valuable insight about behaviors and challenges in a neighborhood. Lived experience greatly enhances understanding of the context. But public input should not get to decide the solutions, not for transportation safety.
