Publisher (Utz Publishing) and translator, mostly of children’s fantasy. Tiptoeing around explicit words and vague feelings. Often wears socks with Moomins on them. Heartbroken.

I do think that tolerance for swearing is quite individual? Because I like to read books aloud to my children I am very aware of the swear levels of books One thing I find hard to read is pseudo swears—I am with Dorothy Parker 3/3

Quote from Dorothy Parker:
So, you're the man who can't spell
'fuck."
Dorothy Parker to Norman Mailer after publishers had convinced Mailer to replace the word with a euphemism,
'fug,' in his 1948 book, "The Naked and the Dead.

I haven't gone to look to see if it's online but back in the day Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin provided a list of made up swears to the makers of the Tank Girl movie to get past censors. The main one I remember is "chugnuts" (poo stuck to bum hair).

More from the same exhibition, a page from the notebooks of Sir Isaac Newton in which are copied out notes and illustrations regarding the alchemical studies of one Nicholas Flamel. Apparently Newton devoted quite a lot of work to the study of alchemy. As above, museum caption in ALT.

Newton devoted approximately one million words - close to the volume of all of his mathematical writings - to the subject of alchemy. His laboratory notebooks document dozens of experiments in which he searched for the Philosopher's Stone through processes of distillation, melting, heating and freezing metals and salts. The notes he left contain "secrets" from the works of earlier alchemists, as well as charts he prepared in order to decipher their encoded records.
Over time, the prestige of alchemy gradually declined.
By the 20 century, such experiments had come to be viewed, at best, as a harmless hobby, and at worst as an embarrassing pursuit. Nevertheless, today they are viewed as an organic part of Newton's intellectual project. For him, alchemy suggested an alternate trajectory for tracing the invisible forces that set the entire world in motion.

So I absolutely think one thing they are getting is a sense of smugness that they no longer need to defer to other people before proclaiming things far outside their area of expertise

From the collection of the National Library in Israel, a grimoire by an unknown author from 17th century Germany. Supposedly retelling the story of Dr Faustus and reproducing his notebooks, this particular page spread charts patterns for hand or wand motions to coincide with the spells.

An old, yellowed notebook on display in a museum-quality case, against a black background, with parts of descriptive captions in English, Arabic and Hebrew. The notebook is about twice wider than it is tall, and opened to a spread of pages that combines flowing handwriting with intricately-drawn geometrical designs.

No unpublished property is worth a million quid. That’s not how good ideas work. There are no magic good ideas. You’d have to never have had a good idea to think something like that. God, people are chemically dumb sometimes.

I actually know the answer to this and it's slightly insane. Google pulls from Wikipedia to determine if a place is a city, town, neighbourhood, whatever. Brighton's first line describes it as a "seaside resort" so Google Maps thinks it's a neighbourhood and doesn't display it in the "city" font.

As far as I can remember my dream, it was about first contact with people living on Mars. They are toddler-sized humanoids but their population is dying out so they reached out to earth for help. It turns out they live in symbiosis with a race of even smaller people, literally little green men, >

This is not a question of “shallowgirl readers choosing glitter over literary substance.” It is a question of “publishers are making decisions to try and fill an emptying market niche, and this is the thing they think has the most money in it.” Blame the corporations, not the kids.
