Just kind of sitting with the fact that that HWA newsletter pro-AI screed was written by Sèphera Girón, and about how messy its argument and positions are, and that my response is basically: "Yeah, that tracks." Pretty much exactly what I expect out of her after former conversations at CZP parties.

It is worth noting that the writer of that HWA newsletter telling people to embrace AI, has an AI based coaching app they are selling

So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?

I am logged on for 2 hours to say I am appalled by what I read in the HWA newsletter. There are AI witch hunts ongoing where writers are being accused of using that garbage tech with no evidence. Telling ppl who use AI proudly to get out is not gatekeeping. Call out the writers and companies.

I am still utterly gobsmacked by companies who want to pass themselves off as author-centric thinking that being "AI"-friendly is a good thing. Even the *perception* of being "AI"-friendly is enough to make actual authors avoid your services like the plague.

It's very easy to say 'I did not use AI in my writing and editing.' The fact that certain authors are tying themselves in linguistic knots to not say that while claiming their work is their own, is rather telling.

Writers beware, there's a scammer posing as Josie Woodbridge, an editorial director at @blackstonepub.bsky.social; they emailed me yesterday. I looked up the editor on LinkedIn (she's real, as is the pub house) and found this pinned post from two months ago. Apparently it's still a valid warning!

When people say this, what they're really saying is, "I think there's a secret that would make this all easy without me having to do any work and no one will tell me what it is." The secret is the work.

Seeing complaints online that authors 'gatekeep' information…! Absolute nonsense. There is no industry or craft in the world which is so comprehensively written about, studied, and discussed as fiction writing, and every author I know welcomes new writers who are serious about giving it a go.

Now realizing that because of delays with Hulderotica releases (I'm behind and the release week structure slipped around), The River Devours the Moon will be out the same day as a Hulderotica story. I'm sure this will be fine...
