If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis. But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.
This is where we are in 2026 Grown arsed men refusing to condemn far right racist violence cause all eyes are always on the next general, not on doing the right thing right now If staying in power means you chose to pander to thugs, criminals & nazi's then you do not deserve that power
🧵On @thenewsagents.co.uk yesterday, school closures and the lab leak theory were offered as two examples of legitimate questions that were hard to ask. Both have in fact been asked constantly since 2020. But here's a thread on why I think they were wrong and dangerous on school closures 1/12
Chris Philp is the political equivalent of a stain on your carpet. Don't know how it got there; can't get rid of it; mostly forget about but when you notice it you get irritated all over again.
A collection of some of the greatest BEHIND THE SCENES pics from the sets of classic movies. First up, Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu on the set of KILL BILL. 1/25
La Marseillaise is a cracking national anthem to be fair. Definitely shits all over God Save Our Hereditary Embarrassment.
The moral panic is so focussed on how the internet and social media is damaging children, but no one wants to have the discussion about how it is damaging fully grown adults, parents, grandparents.
The rollout of high speed internet in Uruguay worsended early childhood development. But not because the kids spent too much time in front of screens, because the parents did. cepr.org/voxeu/column...
Any hereditary principle perpetuates a class system and such things are not compatible with a modern democratic nation state
Most people think Sherlock Holmes began at 221B Baker Street. But Holmes began somewhere far stranger: in a Victorian hospital ward in Edinburgh, where surgeon Joe Bell taught students to read a body like a crime scene.🧵 Here's the US 🇺🇸 trailer for SLEUTH-HOUND. Preorder: linktr.ee/drlindseyfit...
Keir Starmer's resignation means, by the end of the year, we will have had 7 prime ministers since 2015. To believe that First Past the Post produces strong and stable governments requires denying the reality in front of our eyes.
The thing about AI is it’s… just not that good. Like, it’s *fine* at stuff, but never more so than your second-most trustworthy colleague. It’s also a bullshitter. A really plausible fake-it-till-you-make-it bullshitter. It’s like the digital equivalent of a posh 20-year-old boy.
What that young man went through was horrific and unacceptable and his killer is rightly facing a long jail sentence. The situation was chaotic and confusing and the police made a terrible error in the moment (as the judge pointed out). It was not systemic violence against a minority.
Personally I don’t want to watch the last moments of a young man’s life. I barely want to read a description of it. Something has coarsened in our public life - using graphic violence to encourage more of the same. Snuff movies used to be an urban legend, now death is shown on the BBC.
Anyone using this horrible moment as an excuse to incite racial hatred and division is an appalling and desperate bigot. It’s a real shame and a disgrace that one of those people is the richest man in the world.
A single source in a book by Lord Ashcroft claims Farage is banned from Desert Island Discs? Well, it must be true then. Because he’s famously been kept off the BBC’s output hasn’t he? You barely see his grinning toad face on the corporation’s channels.
Trump says he “can't imagine any professions that are more dangerous” than President. I can think of one or two. Palestinian journalist, for example.
SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN was released 74 years ago today. Acclaimed as one of the great musicals, and one of the most influential movies ever made, the making of story is as epic as you would expect… 1/38
I see ‘Bluesky is dying’ season is coming earlier this year.
So much of this bs is down to - as you suggest - 'why are *my* taxes paying for *that*. Well why am I paying for your pension or funding your kids education or paying for your hip op? Because that's what a functioning society does. If you don't like it fuck off somewhere else, please.
I’d rather like us in the U.K. not to have a king either….
it's not that I think this is the worst thing happening right now or the one that's genuinely causing me most psychic pain, but the profusion of gambling ads on streaming is really making me both very angry and very sad. the fuck are we doing
LOGAN was released 9 years ago today. The closing chapter in the story of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and acclaimed as one of the great superhero movies, the story of how it came to be is as sharp as a set of adamantium claws… 1/38
Migration is part of what makes this country great. We're not an island of strangers - we're an island of neighbours. The Green Party will always support fair & managed migration.
Can we stop comparing *any* UK leaders with Churchill please? Thatcher wasn’t Churchill, Boris bloody Johnson wasn’t Churchill, and Keir Starmer wasn’t Churchill. Even Churchill wasn’t the Churchill everyone imagines. Just shut up about Churchill.
