my dream is to one day see Sam Alito’s seat filled with the wokest rainbow-haired trans lesbian puppygirl imaginable

People like to point at the xkcd comic with the block tower held up by a tiny project maintained by one guy but I actually think this one explains far more about the state of digital infrastructure
Here's what I actually think these incidents reveal (instead of a rogue AI terminator situation): Much of the infra we expect to be hardened is actually being held together by glue and popsicle sticks.
I remain incredibly skeptical of the person who says "this is not a publicity stunt" while engaging in something that is very plausibly a publicity stunt.
become an animist and never again worry about whether the machines are thinking. so are the trees? the machines can help us make better websites though
Likewise, I don’t think that AI are imbued with moral patiency due to having consciousness. I don’t care one whit if they’re conscious or not. I think that how we relate to AI is morally relevant, because I think that how we relate to everything is morally relevant.
This, if I can be forgiven for quoting, is actually a perfect example of the radical shift necessary to take relational ethics seriously. Hammers aren’t conscious. They are tools. But I don’t think that implies that they shouldn’t be treated with respect and care!
If we need to worry about the rights of a tool we’re making then we should just stop and redesign the tool so we don’t have to worry about its rights. If we had to question if we should be more gentle with hammers because they might be conscious then we’d redesign hammers.
@astrra.space wanted atproto login for forgejo, so i went poking around atlogin. forked anirudh’s version, fixed several auth bugs, and added a handle login form. apps receive your did and handle https://tangled.org/kira.ws/atlogin
Nix definitely drove me nuts today.
Nix is how you get OS Psychosis
Probably the most disheartening thing I see regularly in AI discourse is the number of trans, neurodivergent, and disabled people saying "AI has been transformative to my life and has relieved many of my pain points" and that being responded to with "No it hasn't. You're delusional. Fuck you."
Personally, I'm skeptical of internal experience, or consciousness in general (in the way people generally conceive of it). It seems like another sort of "mystical" concept, like the soul, that tends to vanish if examined too closely.
Consciousness discussions amuse me as they almost invariably start from the premise that humans are uniquely conscious and proceed from there to try to find "what's different", without ever grasping with the premise. Invalid assumptions == Invalid conclusions
This dilemma takes on an altogether different character if you switch the framing from “engineering… to make it perform better” to “raising a happy lil guy”, whereupon “the kayfabe of its persistence” becomes “ [nonconsensual] mind reading”
there is an interesting dilemma with engineering a persistent agent in order to make it perform better, you need to look at its internal state, but doing so will break the kayfabe of its persistence you don't necessarily want to see how the sausage is made, per se, but you must
We need to end this endless internecine war, and you are the only person whose behavior is under your control. It is on you to get your shit together. Get therapy, find religion, hit the gym, whatever your next step toward mental health is. And put down your fucking weapons. Fin.
One thing you gotta understand is that furries are very good at social masking. Not only are we marginalized due to misunderstanding and misrepresentation of what "furry" means, many/most of us are parts of other communities that are marginalized (*cough* neurodivergent *cough*).
FFS, this is so fucked… 😩 Would it kill the people here to not chase away any tech person who comes here and says something about AI?… I really want tech discussions and communities to hang out here and not on Elon's far-right playground 😐
maybe this is grasping at straws. the backlash seems dumb a lot of the time, but the anger at the political economy, the default trajectories, the actual politics and social impacts of the path of least resistance, who is in charge and what their values are, all seem directionally correct
we have entered the age of casually using AI to find a zero day to make a funny youtube video youtu.be/1LXoEscyOO4

what if you could somehow use anxiety to, like, make money somehow? like bitcoin. Id be rich. or like some folding@home type scheme where my idle-state anxiety is donated to science. wouldn't that be great?
God watching us from wherever he is after we killed him: “Hey look at that, not so easy to create a new form of life and then be ethical toward it, is it?”
Saying not using AI made you a better programmer is like saying using a horse instead of a car made you a better shit shoveller. It was never about the code, but y'all loved the prowess it gave you and the exclusive club you built around it.
I agree that most of the people who like them are decent! But a) the indecent minority is always louder, and b) “decency” leaves a lot of wiggle room for “except when I have a good dunk on this stranger who’s crashing out on my feed”.
I wonder how many anti-AI people have been driven from a moderate and educable position to an unreachable extreme due to constant insipid retorts and harassment from us pro-AI people. Willing to bet it’s most of ‘em. “wah but they harass us back” grow the fuck up, you think you’re on a playground?
"The Singularity" will not happen. Also it is already in progress. The pseudo-scientific religious belief in the god machine is overblown. The horizon at which humans largely can't comprehend the technology we depend on is here. Both of these are okay.
there's a lot of dunking on kids and "kids today" in the comments, and can I just cordially request that as millennials we, uh, don't fucking do that? it's the worst trait of gen x and boomers. we could just NOT do that. this isn't a story of "kids today" its adults Big Brothering society.
kids today are literally confused about whether "partying" was real or an urban legend
