Likewise, I don’t think that AI are imbued with moral patiency due to having consciousness. I don’t care one whit if they’re conscious or not. I think that how we relate to AI is morally relevant, because I think that how we relate to everything is morally relevant.

This, if I can be forgiven for quoting, is actually a perfect example of the radical shift necessary to take relational ethics seriously. Hammers aren’t conscious. They are tools. But I don’t think that implies that they shouldn’t be treated with respect and care!

If we need to worry about the rights of a tool we’re making then we should just stop and redesign the tool so we don’t have to worry about its rights. If we had to question if we should be more gentle with hammers because they might be conscious then we’d redesign hammers.

Probably the most disheartening thing I see regularly in AI discourse is the number of trans, neurodivergent, and disabled people saying "AI has been transformative to my life and has relieved many of my pain points" and that being responded to with "No it hasn't. You're delusional. Fuck you."

Personally, I'm skeptical of internal experience, or consciousness in general (in the way people generally conceive of it). It seems like another sort of "mystical" concept, like the soul, that tends to vanish if examined too closely.

Consciousness discussions amuse me as they almost invariably start from the premise that humans are uniquely conscious and proceed from there to try to find "what's different", without ever grasping with the premise. Invalid assumptions == Invalid conclusions

This dilemma takes on an altogether different character if you switch the framing from “engineering… to make it perform better” to “raising a happy lil guy”, whereupon “the kayfabe of its persistence” becomes “ [nonconsensual] mind reading”

there is an interesting dilemma with engineering a persistent agent in order to make it perform better, you need to look at its internal state, but doing so will break the kayfabe of its persistence you don't necessarily want to see how the sausage is made, per se, but you must

One thing you gotta understand is that furries are very good at social masking. Not only are we marginalized due to misunderstanding and misrepresentation of what "furry" means, many/most of us are parts of other communities that are marginalized (*cough* neurodivergent *cough*).

Mike Masnick @masnick.com: Multiple people I know have told me that they love the idea of Bluesky, and want it to succeed, but have abandoned it for X because the use agentic tools in their work and find them incredibly useful, and feel that any mention of their usage here leads to hate and ridicule. I wouldn't bring this up if it was just one person, but it was multiple people since the beginning of August who mentioned in passing something to the effect of either "I'd spend more time on Bluesky if people weren't so anti-AI" *or* "As much as I hate to be there all the useful AI talk is on X." I'm not saying it's anyone's responsibility to praise AI usage. I agree with much of the criticism of the tool. But for many, many people, it is a useful tech (I have talked about the ways I find it extraordinarily useful, only to have people here mock me, insisting my lived experience is a lie). I am just noting that for all the people here who say that people should get off X and spend more time here, the reason I keep hearing from people in various circles who would *like* to do that, but don't, is the vociferous belief of many here that there are no possible positive uses of AI. I'm not telling anyone what to do or what tech to use or what to like or not like. I'm just relaying that the reputation this place now has is one that a large segment of the population who are NOT fascists, saying they don't feel comfortable here because a main area of their interest is... ... considered worthy of being mocked and attacked. And even as I've explained that I've been able to have positive conversations about productive AI usage here with many of you, the reputation of the community here as insisting their own lived experience can't possibly be real has driven them away. And the thing that tipped me over the edge to posting this here is that three of the people who told me things along these lines are all working on very real solutions to some of the problems of AI

I agree that most of the people who like them are decent! But a) the indecent minority is always louder, and b) “decency” leaves a lot of wiggle room for “except when I have a good dunk on this stranger who’s crashing out on my feed”.

"The Singularity" will not happen. Also it is already in progress. The pseudo-scientific religious belief in the god machine is overblown. The horizon at which humans largely can't comprehend the technology we depend on is here. Both of these are okay.
