“My first day on the job, I fucked up.” That’s the lede to this CJR account of my 4 months in Utah, where I worked as a junior editor. I wanted to see what’s changed since i left local journalism a few decades ago. A lot of things are different. But not everything. www.cjr.org/first_person...

The 69-year-old rookie.

I was a fifty-year newspaper veteran and a journalism professor. Then I joined the Salt Lake Tribune as a junior editor.

Gajdusek didn't "raise" dozens of boys, nor did he just "live" with them, as your teaser and headline suggest. Under cover of NIH research, he adopted, exploited and sexually abused 36 vulnerable children, including this man whose picture you're using to illustrate this story.

The scientist D. Carleton Gajdusek raised dozens of boys from the Pacific Islands in the U.S., from the 60s to the 90s. Rachel Aviv reports on the complicated afterlives of his adoptees. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/wJggJG

MAGA 1 was crazy! To secure any meaningful position in Republican politics required pretending that Donald Trump was an ethical person who never sexually assaulted anyone or did anything racist, that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, and that the Jan. 6 insurrection was righteous.

I talked to this person years ago about a job writing about the ultra wealthy and he told me I was a bad fit because I was obviously going to make jokes about them. I remember this, to be honest, because the hat was present then too www.nytimes.com/2026/08/12/b...

Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

Before reimagining development data, remember what we’ve learned

Why we’re publishing a free, searchable, and ungated archive featuring a quarter-century of USAID evaluation reports.

I just got an email the chief of community prosecution sent to Bluffview residents confirming that the grading and tree removal were done without permits. But rather than "opening a case to escalate enforcement," the city had the proper owner submit new permits. So my questions below still stand.

Why does Dallas have a city attorney's office? Why do we have a tree preservation ordinance? Why do we have a plan commission? Why do we have code compliance? Why do we have a city spokesperson? How do we have a city? Things I contemplated while writing this. www.dallasnews.com/opinion/comm...

Video of an ICE agent pulling a gun on a wife and mother, who is a US citizen born and raised in the area, near Bailey's Crossroads in Northern Virginia yesterday. Chillingly, they claimed she “almost ran them over” until she told them she had video proving that was a lie.
