Legitimately, Valkyria Chronicles - the anime-alternate-history-WWII-with-magical-girls is 1) a great game, go play it but 2) better about addressing the real nature of the Nazi regime than 95+% of 'gritty' modern realistic WWII games. Which is nuts, the bar is just...so low.
The Valkyria Chronicles comp is brutal but completely deserved
Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Facebook reminded me of this meme
Yes I do think you should grade your students work yourself, not use genAI to do your job for you, even before we get to the FERPA implications. *grumble grumble grumble*
agreed (even if I am, indeed, here for the ratio re: Princeton's posts)
new rule: if a university denied someone tenure, or let them go because it canceled their classes, or has shut down the department or program they used to teach in, that university's PR department forfeits the right to put out a celebratory statement when that person wins a Nobel
how about a sector by sector analysis of 40 years of wage theft, particularly in fields related to public service, education, and care work?
A College-by-College Guide to Which Majors Pay Off — or Don’t

I remember getting the 'why do you' version of this question once when I, contingent postdoc, was interviewing for a permanent position. I answered well enough but it really took a lot to not go 'I've got less than a year on my current contract, why do you think?'
Weirdest question a university can ask someone hired as an assistant professor in a humanities field after the financial crisis: “why did you 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 to work at our university?” You weren’t chosen; there were no other jobs; we were lucky to get anything; eternally grateful but you aren‘t special.
My apartment in LA does not have AC, which means I currently consist almost entirely of sweat, spite, and mikan-flavoured popsicles
Annihilation always makes Halloween lists, so I thought I'd do a thread of creepy reads. Starting today with a flat-out modern masterpiece, Max Lury's No Ghosts. Thoroughly contemporary and disturbing grounded in deep characterization, and, in part, outdoing Back Rooms while also its own thing. 1
The Greek system should be put to the torch and the earth salted so nothing can grow in its place.
Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.
me: no worries (galadriel voice) but they were all of them deceived, for another worry was made
YOU COULD HIRE SO MANY FUCKING TENURE TRACK FACULTY FOR THIS. SON OF A BITCH.
Oh. That's a heck of a subsidy.
Nice campaign by the Norwegian Consumer Council about the declining lifespan of products. Enjoy!

The non-hard surfaces in my entire apartment basically include: the couch and a small rug next to the couch and yet! and yet
If I could say one sentence to cats and make them understand it, it would probably be "If you are going to puke, please do it on a hard surface."

And the other 3 months we are expected to do the unpaid work of research and writing and course prep for the sake of our career, as opposed to the paid and supported parts of our job.
Most full-time professors only get paid for 9 months of work per year
I think I've put enough structures in place in my classes that I'm not going to bother hunting AI work. There are consequences, they are clear and they are drastic, but if I catch you, well, you get the hammer, and if I don't, you're wasting your money and your potential and your education.
This! Once you steal all the existing analysis and feed it into the machine and tell everyone to use the machine, where will the new analysis come from?
I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.
i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys
I just sneezed and spooked Tinycat next to me, so that's my evening
