This is really cool. Proud to be the former advisor and colleague of @alexhanna.bsky.social who is one of the leads on this. A searchable website of protest events data compiled about campus protests. Congratulations to the whole team!!
We can build technology that helps our liberatory movements learn from the past, in order to build a better future. Our newest project is an archive of higher-ed campus protests, designed to support campus activists and others working on left and liberatory organizing. campus-protest.org
WRITING IS THINKING. If you offload it to a machine, you think less.
I also think that a lot of the most important parts of writing happen at the revision stage. That’s where you figure out the distances between what you thought you were saying, what you actually said, and what you should be saying. And that’s an active thinking process. GenAI can’t do it for you.
> There was no outbreak of oligarch support when Timnit Gebru […] was fired from Google in 2020 for refusing to take down a research paper she had co-authored. […] Her findings were buttressed by another researcher, Abeba Birhane, who co-authored a paper called “On Hate Scaling Laws for Data-Swamps”

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires
> Why should I use this technology? Does this technology help me solve a real problem in my work? Are there external factors (e.g., financial incentives) pressuring me to use this technology?
In today's @civicsoftech.bsky.social post, David Stroupe, Niral Shah, and Aman Yadav reflect on our recent co-authored article and the problem of "A critical optimist position [that's] clear-eyed about the harm technology can cause while maintaining the belief that technology can improve education."

"If you set up a machine such that any question you put in will lead to an answer coming back out…you are setting up a view of the world and of knowledge that says, 'All questions have a discrete, knowable, objective answer,' and that's just not true and has no place in education." ❤️😍💯

This is your reminder not to let those joyless fucks convince you that human experience, knowledge, intellect, and art can be reduced to a pre-chewed paste of stolen labor.
Just because you/I don't understand AI doesn't mean that no one does. So many people buy into this 'poorly understood' line that lets commercially-motivated tech companies off the hook for harms & near-catastrophes. Kudos to @emilymbender.bsky.social & @timnitgebru.blacksky.app for this.
Once again it’s @timnitgebru.blacksky.app and @emilymbender.bsky.social bringing AI panic back down to earth. For the love of god people please listen to them
There's a real and important dividing line between people who want to write, and people who want to be A Writer. AI is a gift from heaven for the latter, letting them skip the part where they have to think thoughts and write sentences and go (they hope) directly to the book tour.
They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
This is such an important point: > AI boomers vs. doomers: A false dichotomy It's exhausting within academia too with people who claim that the technology has good purposes we're ignoring, when everybody sensible knows so-called desirable properties are a function of the labour and days theft.

“The goal was to destabilize U.S. educational infrastructure and carve out a large space for reactionary indoctrination within it.” When you don’t have a teacher—a thinking person—in a classroom, endless ideological reproduction is easier.
