I suffered through Kratsios' answer to Science: the Endless Frontier. The NYT summary is good, but there's more to it. And I should say that I welcome improvements to the scientific enterprise (which is why I'm participating in @alondra.bsky.social and Jenny Reardon's Public's Science project). 🧵

Important thread in the context of our upcoming Novelty and Inequalities in Science symposium (stss.flu.cas.cz/novelty2026): Metascience literature increasingly seems to be misinterpreted and its empirical results eviscerated from original policy recommendations. Novelty research is a case in point.

I was struck when I corrected data for inflation and population growth. In no way is Trump policy a correction of some overreach. The Biden years were middling for science funding in the 21st century. This is retrenchment to a time before most Americans were born. grant-witness.us/posts/2026-0... 🧪

This was a fun challenge to participate in. It is disappointing, however, that the evaluation dataset, built with the expertise of over 40,000 academics, hasn't been made available to participants, let alone released openly. Once it is, we might expect some long-overdue progress in novelty research.
