Neuroethologist, chemosensory scientist, herp lover. Immigrant and child of a refugee. Haver of snarky opinions. Mostly here to discuss Moby-Dick.
The only time Republicans get upset about kids getting shot is when it’s with vaccines.
Should also point out that the publisher, the Company of Biologists, is a nonprofit that genuinely supports the research community. #neuroethology

My university is doing this too. Walk into most buildings on campus (*don't know about dorms) and you can find a cart with food and sometimes warm clothes on it. On the one hand, friendly, supportive, and community-spirited. On the other hand, dystopian af that this is necessary.
Free grocery stores are opening across the U.S. to help address food insecurity and high grocery prices. Unlike at some food pantries, customers shopping at these stores can choose their own foods, often in private, instead of standing in line for whatever is available on a given day.
Got a new google scholar notification, so I go check and find this very cool poem by Wang Jibing 王计兵, the recent Lu Xun prize winner, prefacing a PhD thesis on women migrant workers and the gig economy PhD students in all disciplines: more poems in theses please, we love to see them! ✨💫
Excellent 🧵
#ResistanceRoots Matthew Henson was born on this day in 1866 in Charles County, Md. He was an African American Arctic explorer who co-discovered the geographic North Pole alongside Robert Peary. During his life, Henson was given little credit for the critical role he played in their expeditions. /1
Okay #bsbookclub, serious question: I'm reading Huck Finn only because I think it's valuable for understanding James. I don't need to read Tom Sawyer to understand Huck Finn, do I?
Important scientific advancements have slowed considerably since 1948.
The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?
Incredibly cool new work. #neuroethology
Now in Science: How does the brain’s navigation system allocate its limited representational resources during behavior? We found that grid cells sweep toward locations of interest, providing a potential mechanism for allocating spatial attention in the cognitive map.🧵 science.org/doi/10.1126/...
A terrific accomplishment but no amphibians! 😢 (Yes, I know why, but still a bummer.)
For the past 30 years, “whole-genome sequencing” has been a misnomer. Today the T2T Consortium publishes a dozen papers heralding a future of truly complete genomes for humans and nearly any vertebrate 👨🔬🐒🐦🐀🦒🐎🫏🐹🐟 (sorry, no salamanders): www.cell.com/consortium/t... 🧵[1/15]
This is the kind of shade I'm here for "Quay declared in his 2024 testimony that he has over 390 publications" "A PubMed search for Quay as author yielded 19 results" lololololol www.medpagetoday.com/washington-w...

An important point from the former chief strategist for the Bush–Cheney 2004 campaign:
Nearly every one of El-Sayed's issue positions is supported by a majority. In fact, his stands are the center of American politics today. Saying he is far left/left wing is just so old. The center of American politics has moved over the last 30 years, and El-Sayed's position are center now.
How is it that 99% of the dudes T***p supports look like classic Bond villains?
Republican voters selected Ty Masterson, the influential leader of the Kansas Senate, as their nominee for governor on Tuesday, The Associated Press said. Masterson was endorsed by President Trump.
As a voter who lives in Michigan, I continue to be shocked by the democratic party's vilification of those of us who cast a symbolic protest vote in the last primary. How tf is this supposed to motivate me to support the party establishment?? www.semafor.com/article/07/3...

In honor of Herman Melville's bday I visited the skeleton of the great sulphur-bottomed whale at UBC this morning. And, like, look: I went expecting to be impressed at huge it is. And I still wasn't at all prepared for how huge it is. 🐋

In Vancouver for #icn2026 and got to see KIM FUCKING GORDON tonight! Almost certainly gonna be the highlight of the meeting, in spite of all the fun science here.

It’s not super great that the two Muslim men running as progressives got a huge establishment backlash from the party’s old guard, while the white dude with a Nazi tattoo got nothing like it
Has it been an hour since I last reskeeted this? Fuck it, I'm gonna do it anyway. Whole piece is well worth a read. And for those of you who don't regularly read Science magazine, um, no, this is NOT the way they normally express themselves. www.science.org/content/blog...
