I am loved by birds and printers 🇳🇿

The last Magdalene laundry closed in my lifetime. Homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland in my lifetime. Access to condoms without a prescription in Ireland only came in 1985. We repealed the 8th. There's a lot of ways in which Ireland is still bad, but it is an entirely different country.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

Do any of my NZ pocket friends like to make entomology-related art/merch & would like to sell their crafts at our upcoming NZ Entomological Society conference 1st week September? If so, please get in touch. 🪲 🐞 🪱 🪰 🕷

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

Chart showing solar panel exports from China (the main solar panel maker by a long shot) growing steadily & mightily from 2018 through 2026, then spiking by almost 2x in March 2026.

A man (30s?) comes striding purposefully out of his house. He's wearing a suit. He's got on sensible shoes. He's got a posh looking man bag... He's patting his pockets. He doesn't have his phone or wallet... He's going back inside his house. Starting all over again! (5)

Feathered phenom 🐦 Kagus suddenly splay their head crests and wings to make themselves look larger, scaring away predators and defending their territory. Known as the "Ghost of the Forest" for their pale plumage and eerie calls, these flightless birds are actually quite gentle and docile.

Today I learned that baby cranes are called "colts" because their legs are so long and they can run around like idiots shortly after hatching. This is delightful, I enjoy knowing this.

photo of two sandhill crane colts that are about 50% leg and 50% neck and head and taking some big steppies.

The “surely the US millitary will refuse illegal orders from Trump” is the weirdest copium because (a) they’re already accepting them and (b) the only time the US millitary was put to the test was when the overwhelming majority of the officer class committed treason en-masse to support slavery.

I’m watching Jason and the Argonauts and this movie fucking rules! A dude shows up with a Half decent dad-bod and every one is like “Holy shit! It’s the strongest man alive! we won’t even test his strength because it’s so obvious!”

Remember when several Māori Party MPs got suspended without pay for a few weeks as punishment for doing a haka? Surely Winston Peters will get a similar punishment for his racist tirade, right? Right? #nzpol

I don't want a "Smart Fridge" that orders milk for me. I want a fridge that lasts 25 years and doesn't have a privacy policy that allows it to share my late-night snacking habits with my health insurance provider.
