'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

A timely and thoughtful reminder -- do your best work and be your best self, as if that were all that mattered, while accepting that it really isn't.
Since we are all in Odyssey-reading mode, and many aspiring legal academics are about to officially go on the job market, I thought I'd say something about what Athena told Telemachus about how to give a talk to senior—and perhaps future—colleagues open.substack.com/pub/rtall/p/...
Every so often I teach someone how to spin yarn on a spindle. And I always tell them that the first yarn you make will not be good yarn, and it's not meant to be, because right now you are not making wool into yarn, you're making yourself into a spinner.

I say this with nothing but love in my heart for the fatherland but can you imagine any other country looking at wildfires and thinking "quick, get a philosopher on the line"
Totally normal situation in which treaty allies view the US as the greatest threat to global peace. What is the dual-hatted Secretary of State/National Security Advisor up to these days?

When Elon Musk says "zero" children died in Africa from his DOGE cuts, he really means zero children died who are *worthy of any concern.* It's vile coded signaling to his global fascist audience. From me and @polphilpod.bsky.social, a deep dive into Musk's fascism: newrepublic.com/article/2135...
The Real Reason Elon Musk Keeps Insisting DOGE Cuts Killed “Zero” Kids
In his explosive interview with The Economist, the SpaceX billionaire inadvertently revealed something darker about his true vision for the future—and about his affinities with global fascism.

Officers shooting a man, running away from law enforcement, who is not a target of law enforcement, and who poses no threat to law enforcement, is murder. Federal officers do not have the power to commit summary executions because they are aggrieved.
The top government official’s “no one should be able to prosecute top government officials for war crimes and crimes against humanity” t-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by his shirt.
Marco Rubio announced a “campaign to dismantle” the International Criminal Court, the Hague-based tribunal tasked with investigating war crimes and more. Rubio accused the court of “waging a war against our country — not with bullets or missiles, but with the force of so-called international law.”

When is Political Violence Justified
What the Liberal Tradition Says on the Subject

To my great dismay, not because I wanted more exposure, two major international news outlets canceled on me last minute yesterday after the decision dropped. Both believed the danger had passed b/c the birthright was upheld. They should've let me explain. I am doing so in a blog this AM.
"It's over, right?" a journo asked me this morning about the birthright citizenship case. No. No legal or political result is final unless the losing side gives up fighting. They will try again. New prez, new judges. There's a social movement based on racial grievance + scapegoating immigrants.
5-4 for what it explicitly says in the constitution is incredible. They were this close to undoing the civil war entirely. bsky.app/profile/mjsd...
The Supreme Court strikes down Trump's attack on birthright citizenship. By a 5–4 vote, it holds that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to children born of unauthorized and temporary immigrants. Roberts and Barrett join the three liberals. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
The majority of this court sees itself in the religious objector, the concerned parent, the fifth place swimmer, etc. but lacks the basic empathy to imagine itself in the shoes of a trans child.
Compare this passage to Masterpiece Cakeshop, where the Court said the *slightest* affront to Jack Phillips' religious beliefs tainted the impartial review of his claims.
Clarence Thomas wrote a whole concurrence just to say that he thinks trans people don't exist. There's no extra *law* there or anything. Just fired off a couple of paragraphs to say that transgender is not a thing and people who think they're trans are crazy.

Lol, the US Atty just put up a facebook post from one of the defendants saying "we need to become ungovernable" and said that they coordinate to use shields against law enforcement. This indictment is going to be so ridiculous.
may we remember speaker hortman every time a kid in Minnesota eats their free lunch. every time a trans person moves to mn for safety. when an undocumented person gets their driver’s license or a returning citizen gets to vote. when we have clean energy and electric school buses and warm homes.
One year ago today, Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were senselessly murdered in an act of political violence. In their memory, we recommit ourselves to the values that Melissa and Mark exemplified: building a kinder, more just, and loving world.

The mifespristone case shows that the abortion federalism promised by Dobbs was a lie—the goal is to ban abortion everywhere, even if that means forcing pro choice states like New York to enforce abortion bans passed by anti-choice states. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

As horrifying as this campaign of premeditated murder is, what might be even more disturbing is the utter indifference of Congress, the public and our allies to such a shocking and unapologetic obliteration of the many laws and norms against targeting civilians. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/31/w...
