Can we program a kinase like a switch? Inspired by natural autoinhibitory complexes, we designed miniproteins against active- and inactive-like conformations of Focal Adhesion Kinase. Depending on the targeted state, the resulting binders either activated or inhibited the kinase.
Don Quixote, Pedro Almodavar, Julio Iglesias, Francisco Goya, can you hear me? Your boys just took one hell of a drawing.

Delighted that this is now out in its final form! 🥳 It's a fun story about an EF hand that doesn't bind Ca2+, but instead works as a ubiquitin-binding domain. Huge thanks to the rest of YK lab, the @mrcppu.bsky.social, and our collaborators (@sebastianglatt.bsky.social)!
Lee Armstrong, Yogesh Kulathu @kulathu.bsky.social and co-workers show that MINDY3's EF-hand domain is a novel #ubiquitin binding domain. It not only enables chain-length-dependent deubiquitination but also binds to DNA repair factors RAD23A/B. -> link.springer.com/article/10.1...
"Let's say this Twinkie represents the outright racists in the UK when that BNP list got leaked in 2008. According to this morning's sample, it'll be a Twinkie....35 feet long and weighing approximately 600 lbs"
A fellow of the Royal Society slashed funding for disease prevention, leading directly to the deaths of uncounted children. He promotes white supremacy and is actively encouraging racist violence in the UK. But he's Elon Musk, a billionaire. So the Royal Society does nothing. @royalsociety.org
Violence on the streets of the U.K. incited and enabled by Elon Musk, a fellow of the @royalsociety.org. When will our national academy stand up for the values it claims to espouse?
This is a pogrom, incited and instigated by Elon Musk. This is now the second set of pogroms incited by Elon in the UK in 2 years.
I have to say, listening to the Today programme dedicate an entire (context free) section about whether migrants are more likely to be convicted criminals *the morning after* hundreds of non-migrants of my own ethnicity committed a pogrom is blood boiling.
Just need everyone to know that the Belgium men's soccer team has new jerseys based on the art of Rene Magritte and this is the official photo shoot
This just gets worse, and worse, and worse.
The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)

Mammalian gene naming conventions and the potential for this kind of mistaken identity have long been a pet hate of mine. There will definitely be other examples of this out there.
Today I'm posting a new blog about an astonishing scientific own goal. Hundreds of papers have reported using a totally wrong antibody to investigate the tumor suppressor p16. This mistake has happened because scientists have muddled the names of two proteins. forbetterscience.com/2026/06/02/m...
Amazing lab, doing fantastic work. Highly recommend. And it's in Dundee, which is obviously a bonus. 😜
I have a CRUK-funded postdoc position and a PhD student (UK only) to study senescence in cancer therapy. See details here: www.dundee.ac.uk/work-for-us/... www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

The known protein universe just got a lot bigger. A newly released artificial-intelligence tool has generated an atlas of more than one billion predicted protein structures and billions more protein sequences. #AI #biotech
Move over, AlphaFold: open source model predicts shape of 1 billion proteins
The new open-source atlas, generated by an AI tool called ESMFold2, vastly increases the known protein universe.

@johanduchene.bsky.social @sholtodavid.bsky.social Spent the last hour looking, found ten more apparently manipulated Western blots in Thermo Fisher's antibody verification data (across eight different catalogued products). Thread below. www.thermofisher.com/antibody/pro...
10 days left to register for the 2026 EMBO ubiquitin conference! Join us in coastal Puglia, for a jam packed schedule on all things ubiquitin (and friends). Fantastic line up of speakers and an impressive amount of opportunities for ECRs and networking. meetings.embo.org/event/26-ubi...
You know the most destructive molecule for my experiments is Air? ITC thermogram shifts? Bubble. Gel refuses to run properly? Bubble. Crystallization ruined? Bubble. Mysterious signal artifacts? Also bubble. My troubleshooting career = fighting microscopic air pockets with a pipette tip. #origichals
still not quite over the fact that i watched 15 year olds get sued for millions of dollars for downloading twelve songs and now we all have to accept AI slop because every tech company in the known universe decided that IP laws don't exist now that they're inconvenient for them
Excited to be in Edinburgh for the next few days at the pediEDI 2006 conference on Protein Evolution, Design & Informatics, organised by @biochemsoc.bsky.social. Looking forward to learning lots! #BiochemEvent
We lost Douglas Adams 25 years ago today. This has made a lot of people very sad and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
