I Need a Cocktail

Former spirits importer. Software Engineer: sold my first program in 1980 at thirteen years old. Customs Broker, technologist, entrepreneur, progressive, I enjoy quality cocktail bars as "3rd places". Long list of hobbies, mediocre at them all.

Tod Maffin 🇨🇦@todmaffin.com · yesterdayTODAY IN CANADA: In 1980, Toronto's World's Biggest Bookstore opened its doors, boasting approximately 1.5 million books and 27 kilometres of shelving. 📚YOUR SAY: Name a Canadian store that's gone now and still makes you a bit sad.
Van Hollen is currently saying that Dems will claw back money set aside for ICE, and use it to replace funds stolen from Medicaid and SNAP. Y'all. We're there.

Austin, Texas sounds like an Eastern European city that just overthrew a dictator. #midterms2026 #election2026
Americans taking the first step in a very long multi-generational journey to prove to the rest of the world that they aren't all just an extension of Trump's id.
Ali Velshi on MSNBC confirming, as a journalist, that Toronto is the only city that matters.
okay so while we're all up and chatting: DC statehood DC statehood DC statehood DC statehood DC statehood DC statehood DC statehood
I don’t want Dems to find a way to move forward, or work together, or any of that. I want investigations, impeachments, and subpoenas. I want all these people to stand and to be held accountable for the harms they have caused in our community. I want justice.
For whom am I more sad that they didn't get to see this? Charlie Kirk or Harambe?
I feel as if I'm going to wake up from all of this and find out it was just a dream.
One way of looking at the video of Toronto police beating on 3 teenagers is: imagine the same amount of cop power on 3 people accused of not paying $3.30 at a parking meter for their car.

Jaymz Bee@jaymzbee.bsky.social · 6d agoI’m not sure what is happening with Bluesky – there is no engagement at all. First started I actually thought it might give Facebook a run for its money, but it’s turned to be just another app that very few people bother with. I welcome any comment. Is there anybody out there?
Just saw this on Reddit and found it very entertaining and informative. Wondering if people on Blue Sky have any more?

thinking about Patrick Stewart and Tim Curry and Dolly Parton and Catherine O’Hara and how many of the tributes shared after they died translate to something like “their art made me feel like I wasn’t alone in the world” it is hard to think of a better way to spend a life than that

Really great piece here about how election results get framed, and for whom.

The map of third place vote in Toronto Centre, i.e. the Tate vote, is telling. Cabbagetown may need to update the story it tells itself about its role in the city.
Another great organization tracking Doug Ford's monstrous corruption and every day malfeasance. I love the subversion of Doug Ford's bullshit "Protect Ontario" propaganda. Also, free lawn sign. #onpoli protectont.ca

"Ass, Grass, or Gas". Nobody gets to sit through a Trump speech without hearing about at least two of these.
That Chow/Bradford result almost looks like the Valks/Dream score tonight.
I hope those Liberal MPPs who endorsed Bradford are looking over their shoulders.
Early lead for Bradford in the Toronto election, but doesn't mean anything....... Yet.
